Griffon 1/7 Sasara Kusugawa "Sukumizu Maid"Griffon 1/7 Sasara Kusugawa "Sukumizu Maid"

Today, we'll be reviewing Griffon's "Sukumizu Maid" figure of Sasara Kusugawa. There may be a few shots that are a little bit NSFW.

About the character: Sasara Kusugawa is a primary character from To Heart 2. She is the student council president, succeeding her friend Maryan in that role. While she seems to be somewhat cold and aloof (Maryan seems to be one of the few people to whom Sasara is close) and she takes her responsibilities as student council president very seriously, she is actually a very shy and gentle young lady.

Now on to the review.

Packaging----------9/10

The front of the box features a large window.

The sides also have large windows.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1391389639.jpeg
The back of the box features some fanservice-y shots. Where did someone come up with the idea to label one of the photos "Zoom", I wonder?

The top of the box also has a large window.

Overall, I like the box. It's colorful, and it has some good shots of the figure and lots of windows for those who keep their figures in the box. The box measures about 23 by 20 by 18 cm and figure and box weigh in around 600 grams. If that seems to you quite heavy for a 1/7 scale figure, you'd be correct. More on that later.

Posing----------9/10

I like Sasara's pose. With the combination swimsuit/maid outfit, and the fact that she's down on all fours, it's a little bit suggestive. However, Sasara is a pretty shy girl and she's not really giving off too much of a "come hither" vibe. Rather, she seems a little bit perplexed by her position.

Let's take a look at her.

Sculpting----------8/10
Painting----------7.5/10

Griffon sometimes gets a bad rap, but I think that the overall finish of the figure is pretty good. She has a few issues, but none of them are too severe.

Let's start by taking a good look at Sasara's face. I've gone back and forth about her facial expression. When I first saw the figure, I thought it was too plain, but now I kind of like her facial expression, as it plays up the shyness of the character. There is some shading on her cheeks, and I think her eyes are pretty expressive as well.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1391389771.jpeg
Another view of Sasara's face. I like the way she's sort of cradling her chin in her hand.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389773.jpeg
The finish on her headband is okay, although you can see a couple of rough spots in her hair.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389775.jpeg
Because of her pose, you don't really get much of a view of the front of her outfit, but there are some nice details here. I like how you can see her apron being cinched around her waist. In addition, Sasara has some curves, but she is not ridiculously proportioned.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389777.jpeg

Sasara has quite a large mane of blonde hair, and you can see a few flaws in its finish.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389809.jpeg

Her hair looks a little better from behind, although that seam on top of her head stands out.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389815.jpeg

I like how she has sleeves even though her shoulders are bare, as the dark color tends to really draw the eye. The frill at the top of her sleeve is decently sculpted. You can see a couple of spots where her sleeve picked up some excess white paint.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389845.jpeg
Her hands are nicely sculpted.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389847.jpeg
There are a couple of little rough patches in the frill on her stockings, but the ribbons are sufficiently non-chunky and the painting on the black ribbon is acceptable.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389880.jpeg
She also has ribbons on her socks, although they are a bit on the chunky side. The painting on the buckles is the sort of thing that could be really messy, but the finish is generally good there.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389882.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389884.jpeg

The bow where her apron is tied is really, really thick!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389886.jpeg
I wouldn't quite call it a bubble-butt (in a good way!), but it's pretty shapely. I like how you can see the material in her swimsuit stretching just a little bit. There are a couple of spots where the transition from her swimsuit to her body is not quite perfect, but it's not really too noticeable unless you're really looking for the flaw.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389942.jpeg

This spot where her skin, apron, and swimsuit meet is really sloppy.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389944.jpeg
You can see a couple more rough patches in her hair. The tag on the swimsuit is a nice touch, though.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389946.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1391389948.jpeg

Overall, Sasara has a few issues, but her outfit is also fairly intricate with all those frills and ribbons. Thus, I'd say the quality of her finish is about average, and I'll give credit for all the little details in the design of her outfit.

Base----------7/10

Sasara's base is the type of base that Griffon has become famous (infamous?) for. It's a large black disc with a nameplate of the character.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1391390029.jpeg
Unlike some of the figures where Griffon has used this type of base, it doesn't look horrifically out of place. Plus, the way Sasara is posed, she doesn't really need the base, so if it really bothers you, the base can simply be stashed back in the box.

However, it should be noted that the base is absolutely gigantic.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1391390031.jpeg
Yes, that is a standard DVD case for comparison.

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Before we finish the review, let's talk about her scale, which Griffon lists at 1/7. Now, Etna here is also made by Griffon and is listed at 1/7 scale. You can see that Sasara is similarly posed, but she seems somewhat larger.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1391390110.jpeg
Nagi is also 1/7 scale, and again Sasara seems a bit larger.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1391390137.jpeg
Sasara with some of her castmates from To Heart 2. Maryan is 1/8, Manaka is listed at 1/7, and Tamaki is a very large 1/6.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/victorviper1391390192.jpeg

The way she's posed, she's a little more than 5 inches (13 cm) tall. I measure the total length of her body at about 9.25 inches (23.5 cm). At 1/7 scale, this would make her about 164.5 cm tall, and I've seen her height listed at 163 cm, so she is definitely at the large end of 1/7 scale.

I had been on the lookout for a Sasara figure for a while, and I was kind of dissatisfied with the offerings that were out there. I'd looked at ITEM #54000 (her outfit is boring), ITEM #9076 (her face seems off), and ITEM #99091 (her expression is a little bit blank). I thought about getting this figure new when she was re-released, but if I recall that was a busy month and I ended up passing on her . However, when I found a nice one on AmiAmi preowned, I figured the time was right.

In summary:

Arguments for: her pose is cute without being lewd, her outfit has lots of little details, and the overall finish of the figure is good. Also, the contrast of her fair skin, blonde hair and the dark colors on her swimsuit and stockings really makes her stand out on the shelf!

Arguments against: there is a little bit of sloppy painting here and there, that base is ginormous.

In retrospect, I would have been happy paying full price for this particular Sasara; the fact that I got her pretty inexpensively preowned is icing on the cake. Thus, if you're looking to add a Sasara to your collection, I'd strongly recommend this particular figure.

Availability (as of this writing)

Fairly easy to find.

She shows up pretty regularly through the various pre-owned sources. I'd expect to pay around 3000-4000 yen for a nice pre-owned Sasara. Quite a bargain, really. She also has a color variant ITEM #5459. I'm not a big fan of the pink version but it's out there if that's your preference.

Akira (4 anno/i fa) #2090312When I first saw this figure I thought "This must be from 2007 or something. It can't be recently". Then I got shocked because I saw the date of her re-release and then I smiled because I was almost right.
Anyway, I think she looks very good for a Griffon. I mean because the only changes she has are some minor paint differences but is not even that shocking. The review is very nice as well 0: The close ups on the details and scale comparison were a nice addition.

Nice figure-dating eye :). It slipped my mind that she was originally released back in 2008. Compared to other figures released around then, her sculpt is really pretty good.

Eccmy (4 anno/i fa) #2088243Thank you for the review, victorviper! :)
This is one of the Sasara figures that caught my eye, but I was hesitant due to having been severely burned by Griffon in the recent past. Glad to see that figure is overall pretty good, I'll try to get it when I'll have the chance and money.

She's far from perfect, but she's not too bad. Plus, there are surprisingly few good Sasaras out there, so this one might be worth your while if you like the character :)
