I'm over 18
Today we'll be reviewing the latest figure of the well-known Sonico. It's Sonico in a bikini, and her top can be cast off, so there are most certainly some NSFW elements to this review. The cast-off shots are behind spoiler tags in the event you don't want to see them...

About the character: Sonico is Nitroplus' well-known mascot character. Some of her vital data (from the Sonicomi Artbook ITEM #90708):

Birthplace: Musashino City, Tokyo
Blood Type: A, supposedly indicating that she is earnest and reserved.
Height: 158 cm (5'2")
Three sizes: 90-57-87 cm (35-22-34 inches)
Hobbies: Taking baths, playing with cats
Talents: Playing guitar, Japanese cooking

I suspect most everyone knows Sonico, so let's get this Sonico party started!

Packaging----------8.5/10

If you keep your figures in the box, you'll appreciate the fact that the front of the box is mostly window.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035939.jpeg

The sides feature full-body shots of Sonico.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035940.jpeg

The back features a number of shots of Sonico.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035941.jpeg

The Nitroplus "Approval" icon is cute!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035942.jpeg

The top of the box has a nice shot of Sonico. From this shot, you can probably tell that the box is not too wide nor deep.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035943.jpeg

The box measures 37 by 16 by 16 cm, and Sonico and box weigh in just under 800 grams. For such a large figure, the box is not outrageously huge, but neither is it tiny, so she will need a good sized shipping box. Thus, estimate conservatively for the cost of shipping Sonico. My Sonico shipped with one other figure, and EMS shipping to the US was about 4400 yen.

Sonico in the blister. As soon as I took the blister apart, the base fell right out, so you might want to be careful when opening up the blister!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035944.jpeg

I was a little surprised that Sonico did not come screwed into the base, given the non-negligible mass of the figure. There is a metal peg which slides into the heel of her boot which should help keep her stable, but I would have preferred to see her pre-attached to the base.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035945.jpeg

She has plastic around her to prevent paint transfer. Some of the plastic is underneath her bikini top, so we know what that means...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035946.jpeg

To get that plastic off, her head pops off.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035947.jpeg

The tie on her bikini is attached to a small peg. Removing the bow allows the strap to come apart, although it took me a second to figure out how her top was supposed to come off!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035948.jpeg

NSFW cast-off shots of Sonico lurk behind the spoiler tag. If you don't want to push the review into full NSFW territory, you could skip this...

View spoilerHide spoiler
I like the fact that this Sonico looks pretty natural in her cast-off state; it doesn't give off that aura of blatant pandering or exploitation that sometimes you get with cast-off figures...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/03/1036595.jpeg

Sometimes sculpting issues lurk in the underboob area, but I can find none of note. Mine had a little bit of a scratch on her torso under her left breast, but I was unable to reproduce it in a photo.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/03/1036597.jpeg

Because her top can be removed, the straps on the bikini are not quite as snug maybe they should be. I guess that's the peril of cast-off. Fortunately, it's quite easy to reassemble her top, although the tie seems a little prone to falling off.

When putting her bikini top back on, some care will be needed not to get it all tangled up with her necklace.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035949.jpeg

Posing----------8/10

Many figures of Sonico depict her either stumbling around or in some sort of a compromising position, but this particular Sonico is pretty static.

Let's have a look at her.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035950.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035951.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035952.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035953.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035954.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035955.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035956.jpeg

The pose is pretty static, but this Sonico seems much more mellow than the norm, and she gives off a slightly more mature vibe than many of the other Sonicos out there, so I like the pose. Depending on what you think her personality should be like, we could disagree on this point, I suppose.

In addition, the pose is inspired by an image from the Sonicomi artbook, and it's very faithful to the illustration. Her bangs don't quite hang in her face quite so much on the figure, though!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035957.jpeg

It's worth noting that this figure is a variant of ITEM #98781 . Personally, I much prefer the darker colors on this Sonico. Further, her bikini has a metallic effect, which is quite sexy IMO.

Sculpting---------8/10
Painting----------9/10

I only own a few other Orchid Seed figures, so I wasn't too sure what to expect in terms of Sonico's overall finish. I'd say the overall finish is good, but not quite excellent. There aren't too many issues in terms of painting, but there are a few sculpting flaws present.

As I mentioned a minute ago, Sonico looks a little more mature than the norm in this figure and this is reflected in her facial expression. Her eyes are expressive, and I like the way her bangs are sculpted; they aren't chunky, and the little bits of hair are nicely differentiated.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035958.jpeg

She has a little guitar-shaped pendant on her necklace, but I'll forgive you if that's not the first thing to draw your eye...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035959.jpeg

A close-up of the pendant. The level of detail on the pendant is pretty good, and its turquoise color and sheen almost could make you think it's made from a precious stone. The little stars on the necklace are cute, too.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035960.jpeg

Of course, one of Sonico's key features is her ever-present headphones. Generally, their finish is good.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035961.jpeg

You can just barely see it in this photo, but on mine, her headphones had two little scratches on them in the upper right quadrant.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035962.jpeg

As with most Sonico figures, the pink color of her hair gets more saturated towards the tips.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035964.jpeg

There is some sort of sculpting defect in her hair. It's hard to see, but imagine drawing a straight line at the bottom of her arm and follow it through her hair. It looks like a little bit of excess material.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035965.jpeg

Her hands are sculpted pretty well, but you can see a little bit of excess material on one of her fingers.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035966.jpeg

She has pink fingernails. Is it my imagination, or is her wrist a little bit small relative to her hand?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035967.jpeg

Sonico has a narrow waist, which is consistent with her design. Her canon three sizes are 90-57-87 cm (35-22-34 inches), and since you need to know these things, I measure the three sizes of this figure at 6 5/8 - 4 1/4 - 7 inches (16.8-10.8-17.8 cm). At 1/5 scale, that would make her 84-54-89 cm. So her waist is a little bit narrow, but it's not something that should stand out. Does it sound silly to say that her breasts are a little too small?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035968.jpeg

Sometimes things like these little ties can be chunky, but that is not the case on this figure. The knot looks pretty good in fact.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035969.jpeg

Sonico has a little bit of a stomach, and you can see a suggestion of her hipbone.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035971.jpeg

There's quite a bit of shading on her body. I noticed that under bright light, it seems like that area right around her armpit might be a little bit too dark, but that's probably getting picky.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035972.jpeg

Now, let's give credit where credit is due. I have to say that is one magnificent butt! Also, it looks pretty impressive when the light catches that metallic purple swimsuit just right. I also like the way her bottom is grabbing into her waist and pulling her butt cheeks together...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035973.jpeg

Lower-angle version of the previous shot.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035974.jpeg

There's some sort of a flaw visible near where her forearm and bicep come together.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035975.jpeg

Another distinctive feature of this figure is Sonico's stockings. The star theme is cute, and these stockings seem like just the thing Sonico would wear!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035976.jpeg

I like the way her stockings are compressing her thighs a little bit.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035977.jpeg

The effect is even more pronounced from behind. Further, I wouldn't blame anyone if they chose to display Sonico facing backwards!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035978.jpeg

The detail on her boots is pretty good. It looks like she forgot to finish lacing up her left boot, which seems like the sort of thing Sonico might do!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035979.jpeg

The painting on the laces is probably the biggest painting issue with the figure. However, I like the raised eyelets and the stitching is a nice touch. The stitching really makes it look like her boots are made of a thick leather.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035980.jpeg

Base----------8/10

There's not a whole lot to say about the base. Like I mentioned earlier, I would have preferred to have her screwed into the base for stability.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035981.jpeg

On the other hand, for a large figure, the base is not gigantic. It's just over 5 inches (13 cm) in diameter. Below, you see the base and a standard CD case for comparison.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035982.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

1/5 is not exactly the most common scale, so let's see how Sonico compares in terms of scale with some other figures. I measure her at right about 32 cm (12.5 inches) in height, which is consistent with her canon height of 158 cm at 1/5 scale.

Here we see Sonico with FREEing's 1/4 Kuroko Shirai.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035983.jpeg

Sonico with Kotobukiya's 1/6 Mikoto Misaka.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035984.jpeg

In the shot below, Sora is 1/8, and Sena is 1/7 (and that Sena is not exactly tiny herself!).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035985.jpeg

Sonico seems surprised to see Yotsuba taking her photo...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/07/02/1035986.jpeg

So, to summarize:

Arguments for: That purple metallic bikini really draws the eye, her overall appearance is a little more mature and less ditzy than the typical Sonico, that butt, non-ginormous base, and she actually looks tasteful should you opt to display her cast-off.

Arguments against: Her rather unusual 1/5 scale means it could be tricky trying to display her, she has some sculpting flaws you don't really want to see on a 10000+ yen figure, and she probably should've been screwed into the base for stability.

Overall, I'd say this is a really nice Sonico with some interesting features, and I think it is superior to the original white version. The metallic look of her bikini and the darker colors just make it stand out so much more in my opinion. Thus, if you need some Sonico in your life, I would recommend tracking down this figure.

Availability (as of this writing)

Sold out new.

Right now, AmiAmi, HLJ, and Hobby Search all list her as sold out. The white version has been going for anywhere from 9500 yen to around 14000 yen pre-owned, and it seemed to dip in price when this figure went up for preorder. However, just this morning AmiAmi listed an A/B one at 12480 yen, and as I write this Mandarake has one for 14000 yen, so it's possible that in the short term, you might have to pay more than the original retail (11429 yen) for one of these Sonicos pre-owned.

There is also a silver variant of this figure ITEM #194631, but it was super-limited, and it regularly fetches upwards of 20000 yen secondhand.

ComplexCRUSH6 anno/i fa#2233281I have the original White and I love her to death. Mine definitely does not have any paint flaws. NOT EVEN ONE. No scratches or excess material except mine also has the lines on her hair. my biggest complaint is that her base is warped and it wobbles, so i have a little sliver of plastic tucked in there to keep it from wobbling otherwise she'll end up facing some weird direction. She was hard to display at first but, I've kind of stopped worried about making her look "less big" because that's her appeal, I just make her a centerpiece now ^.^ Great review!

This one (or at least mine) doesn't seem to have any issues with base wobble, although the small pegs which attach her to the base do worry me a little bit.

I've got her displayed with my DOAX figures. Since they are all 1/6 scale, she fits in OK, but like you said she's worthy of being a centerpiece figure. I would have been okay with Orchid Seed making her 1/4...

StrawberryFuma6 anno/i fa#2231004I don't think I've ever seen this girl with a bikini in her size.

Does Alter's upcoming Sonico ITEM #166982 qualify? It's at least close to the right size...

silentxangel6 anno/i fa#2230913I have the white bikini version as well. It'd be good to display them side by side, except the other will be facing backwards so we get to appreciate dat ass XD

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only person who seemed to think that might be a good idea :). I thought about getting the white version, but as soon as this one was announced, it just looked so much better.

Currently waiting for this figure via USAL (zzzzzz) and I have to say your review got me way more excited. Missed out on the original figure but I'm glad I held off because the berry version is more alluring and better in my opinion. Also those black boots!

The only problem with the black boots is that it magnifies a little bit of sloppy painting on the laces. However, the dark color also draws the eye to her stockings, which are quite cool themselves.
