Kotobukiya 1/6 Konomi Yuzuhara "Innocence"Kotobukiya 1/6 Konomi Yuzuhara "Innocence"

The summer solstice was the other day. So, let's welcome the arrival of summer by reviewing a beach figure which has become one of my favorites, an old (2010) Kotobukiya offering of Konomi Yuzuhara. Since this is a beach figure, many of the shots below could be considered a little bit NSFW...

About the character: Konomi Yuzuhara is a character from the well-known visual novel To Heart 2. In fact, Konomi is intended to be the main character, although it seems like these days if you ask around people might think the main character is castmate Tamaki Kousaka ENTRY #2144 .

In any event, Konomi is a long-time friend of protagonist Takaaki, and she generally has a cheerful and energetic disposition. With her chipper personality and the fact that she harbors long-time feelings for the protagonist, Konomi is a canonical example of the "childhood friend" character archetype.

Some of her vital statistics:

Height: 150 cm (5'0")
Three sizes: 74/55/77 cm (29/22/30 in)
Bloodtype: O, meaning that she is confident and optimistic.

Now on to the review.

Packaging----------8/10

Like many of the figures in their "4-Leaves" line of figures, Kotobukiya uses a plain green box with a large window.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216372.jpeg

Similarly, like most of the other 4-Leaves figures, the side panel is just a plain, solid panel.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216374.jpeg

The back panel features a rather washed-out image of Konomi-chan.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216378.jpeg

There's not too much set up involved, other than to get Konomi's sandals positioned in her hand.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216451.jpeg

Two pegs in Konomi's foot anchor her to the base, at which point she's ready for a trip to the beach.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216380.jpeg

Konomi is not a small figure, but the box is not outrageously large. The box measures 28 by 15 by 15 cm and the whole package weighs in just over 400 grams.

Posing----------9/10

Konomi has a pretty interesting pose, particularly compared to other beach figures. As we'll see, her expression subtly changes when she's viewed from different angles, so without further adieu, let's have a look at her.

Konomi looks cute from a number of different angles, so I'd say that Kotobukiya did a fine job on this front.

Sculpting----------7.5/10
Painting----------8.5/10

Overall, I'd say that Kotobukiya did a pretty good job with this figure. She has one or two really distracting issues, but Konomi also has really well-done features, and I'd say that her overall finish is slightly above average, particularly when considering she was released eight years ago.

One of my favorite things about this figure is Konomi's facial expression. Her big red eyes, messy hair, and her little smile can't fail to melt your heart, can they?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216641.jpeg

I also like how her expression seems to subtly change from certain angles. From this angle, she looks a little bit coy, almost as if she's teasing someone by fiddling with her swimsuit.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216643.jpeg

From this angle, however, her expression seems to change to one of surprise, as if someone has walked in on her while she's changing.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216645.jpeg

The little pink bows which tie her twin ponytails are quite cute!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216793.jpeg

I like the texture in her hair, and her huge messy bangs draw attention away from where the bangs attach to her head.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216795.jpeg

The ruffles on her top serve to play up the cuteness of the character.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216797.jpeg

My biggest beef with this particular feature is this ugly spot on her elbow. Now, I suppose it can be impractical to mold a torso and a pair of arms in a single piece, this is an older figure, and I've seen this solution used on a number of older figures (ITEM #2657 and ITEM #830 come immediately to mind), but it still detracts a little bit from an otherwise lovely figure...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216799.jpeg

The huge bows/ties are a very distinctive feature of Konomi's swimsuit, and I like how Kotobukiya sculpts a clasp on the back of her top. The head-to-neck transition could have been done just a little bit better, though.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216801.jpeg

The way Konomi is tugging at her top, I was afraid that she'd be a little too ecchi, but it turns out that she's really not exposing too much of herself. There are no truly naughty bits to be found on display (that would be pretty unusual for a Kotobukiya figure, anyway), which is fine with me.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216851.jpeg

If there was an award for "best figure stomach", this figure might be the winner, as Kotobukiya really did a fantastic job sculpting Konomi's stomach! The shading looks nice, and although Konomi is extremely slim, there's just a little bit of a bulge which differentiates her stomach from her hips. With her low-rise bikini bottom, you can also see how her stomach transitions into her pelvis.
Her navel is nicely sculpted, too.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216853.jpeg

The ruffle on Konomi's bikini bottom pairs up well with her frilly top.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216855.jpeg

Kotobukiya did a nice job sculpting those huge ties. They are not chunky, and the suggestion of a knot in the middle of the tie is a nice little detail.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216857.jpeg

Maybe it's me, but it seems like Kotobukiya got a little carried away shading the flesh on her left hip.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216938.jpeg

Low-angle shot. She has kind of a flat butt, but Konomi is a pretty petite girl, so that probably makes sense.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216940.jpeg

Other than that point on her elbow, the only real issue I have with the sculpt of this figure is visible in the shot below. It seems like her calves are a little too short relative to her thighs, doesn't it?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216942.jpeg

The bows on Konomi's sandals are a nice touch.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216944.jpeg

Base----------6/10

Well, she has one...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445216946.jpeg

It's a fairly blah design, but considering that Konomi is not a small figure, it doesn't take up a bunch of space, and so that's about the best thing I can say on this front.

Scale Comparison

Konomi is supposed to be 5'0" (150 cm), and this figure is about 9.5 in (24 cm) tall, and that makes her listed 1/6 scale pretty spot on. Konomi-chan is however a pretty petite girl, so she might look more like a largish 1/7 scale figure sitting on your shelf.

Konomi with Nono Nekomiya ITEM #209 . In addition to the fact that they look pretty cute together, Nono and Konomi have similar body types, and Nono was also made by Kotobukiya and listed at 1/6 scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445217001.jpeg

When I bought this figure, I knew the color of Konomi's swimsuit seemed familiar, but until I put her on display it didn't really dawn on me where I'd seen the color before. It turns out that isn't the first Kotobukiya offering to use this color; can you identify the other figure in the shot below?

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445217143.jpeg

It's Miki Hoshii ITEM #98895. Miki is a large 1/7 scale.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/victorviper1445217188.jpeg

Here is Konomi with her To Heart castmate Tamaki Kousaka. Griffon's Tamaki ITEM #103700 is a very large 1/6 scale, and Tama-nee is a pretty tall girl, so she looks more like 1/5.5 sitting on the shelf.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1529849797.jpeg

I like the frilly accents on the swimsuits of both Konomi and Yayoi Takatsuki ITEM #118116. Yayoi is a large 1/7 scale, and I cheated a little bit when taking this shot by propping Yayoi up on a little 1/2 inch riser.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1529849800.jpeg

I really like how these two go together, as their slightly-awkward body language makes each of them very cute! Kalmia Project's Kotori Takigawa ITEM #454174 is 1/7 scale.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1529849794.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Arguments for: Konomi's green swimsuit is a change of pace that will distinguish her from other beach figures, she looks cute (and her expression changes subtly) from a number of angles, dat stomach, overall good quality, lots of personality.

Arguments against: That horrible seam on her elbow stands out, rather blah base.

Konomi has surprisingly few scaled figures, further emphasized by the sheer number of figures which have been made of castmate Tamaki Kousaka. For quite a long time, I was on the hunt for just the right Konomi figure and I'd considered ITEM #4071 (cute but small with the kneeling pose), ITEM #691 (interesting idea with the swimsuit and the uniform, but I wasn't sure about the quality of the figure), and ITEM #118151 (cute but a little more ecchi than I was looking for). Finally, I decided on this one and I'm glad that I did. While this is a pretty simple figure, Konomi is one of those figures that just makes me happy whenever I see her on the shelf. Thus, if you like Konomi and you like beach figures, I'd recommend this one without hesitation.

Availability (as of this writing)

Not too hard too find, but not exactly common.

The pink variant ITEM #27676 of this figure *is* quite common, but this version is just marginally more difficult to find (only 9 people on MFC claim to own it). With a little effort, however, it shouldn't be too hard to find your very own coral green Konomi, as I see this figure every now and then when making the rounds of the various figure shops. I paid 3400 yen for my Konomi, and I'd say for either version of the figure, you should expect to to pay somewhere in the 2500-4000 yen range secondhand. Quite a bargain IMO.

victorviper (1 mese/i fa) #38697176Jungle still has Koyori (A grade with some box fading) for 3456 yen. I can't recall Komugi's exact price, but I remember the two of them combined would have cost me about $100 US, so about 7000-8000 yen must have been their price for Komugi.
I'm sort of kicking myself for not getting them both when I had the chance...

Dang, those are such good deals! I can understand you are bummed you missed out on them. I am sure you will find them again in the future, but Komugi can be a bit of a wait to find again. ;) I hope you'll write a review for Koyori if you get her!

Maakie (1 mese/i fa) #38689017At first I didn't really like that figure in all honesty, as I found it indeed too ecchi for Komugi. I bought her because a local figure collector was willing to part with her for an incredibly low price and the Komugi fan that I am, I couldn't refuse. Her quality is very good and I have no regrets. :)
I also feel like ITEM #5890 is too ecchi for the source material, but I assume that she will be of just as high quality as ITEM #5888 which would mean that she is worth it. :) Do you remember their prices on Jungle? They always seem to go for way lower than their release price.

victorviper (1 mese/i fa) #38590116I can never decide if that Komugi figure is really over the top ecchi or not. After all, the Komugi OVA does have its moments of ecchiness, and so the figure kind of reflects the overall tone of the show...
It's funny you mention that Komugi figure. Jungle had both that Komugi figure and the corresponding Koyori ITEM #5890 not long ago, but I dawdled around and Komugi sold, and it feels somehow wrong to have just the Koyori figure by herself. The next time I find them both at the same place at the same time, I'll have to get them.

Maakie (1 mese/i fa) #38497265I never realised the first figure was actually Koto's work, haha! And those cast-offs are very interesting, all those three don't seem to be really popular, so I never saw reviews for them or saw them up in a store. This conversation does remind me of the time people were laughing at Griffon trying lewd stuff, while they actually made some great ecchi figures! Even though she does not seem ecchi, I really like the small details they did on ITEM #3835 , such as her tugging at her suit and actually showing off quite a bit PICTURE #1289579 ! And lets not forget this one ITEM #5888 !
Yeah, the black/white one is next to that, also very fitting for Konomi! I used to own ITEM #2200 and thought she was always very adorable! She's not the highest quality though, so I don't think I would recommend you her to get with the current availability of other Konomi figures. ;)

victorviper (1 mese/i fa) #38280591I think the ecchiest Kotobukiya figure could be either ITEM #14132, ITEM #52812, ITEM #42946, or ITEM #5758, as the latter three figures are actually castoffs. It's funny how a lot of the mainstream figure companies dabbled in castoff figures for a while a few years ago and then never did any more...

Maakie (1 mese/i fa) #38278785That's true, for Kotobukiya the most ecchi I have is panties showing and tight fitting clothing. So would this then be the most ecchi Kotobukiya figure out there...? ;)
I have always loved the super realistic look of the swimming toy of ITEM #167173 . I also like how that figure looks more 'modern' than most other To Heart figures (although it makes it a bit off-style). Also wow, I had not realized how much that one had raised in value!!

victorviper (1 mese/i fa) #38061192This is quite a good figure for an older Koto offering, because, like you said, the body sculpt is really quite good.
The straps on the sandals actually seem quite sturdy; the figure is 8 years old, and I've had her displayed for a little more than three years, and I can see no obvious signs of deterioration.
Because Konomi is pretty flat-chested, she doesn't really show off very much of herself by tugging at the swimsuit other than just a little bit of underboob. I was concerned that this feature would make her too ecchi, but then I said "well it's Kotobukiya", and figured it wouldn't be over the top ecchi.
I'm always tempted by this ITEM #167173 Konomi figure whenever I see it, but that one might be a little too ecchi for my personal taste.

Maakie (1 mese/i fa) #38053249Oh! I think I have not seen a review of this specific figure from Konomi before. :) That old box design from 4-leaves is 'eh', though. :/ The 'newer' ones look quite a bit better: PICTURE #1874852 . With this figure, I wonder if the loose 'dangling' sandals will get some detoriation over time, considering how small the straps are.
Anyway, with this figure...she is more ecchi than I expected! I did not even realize she was partially lifting her top! There's just so many To Heart and Konomi figures out there that unless I come across a review, I don't even notice all their details. Her calves are indeed a bit short, but those thighs make up for it to me. :) So for me, I'm left with a bit mixed feelings, but I think she is an above average figure, especially with the sculpt of the swimsuit and body. :)

sailormatlac (2 mese/i fa) #36405540Once again, an well written review about a long forgotten figure. As you know, I acquired her earlier this year following your advice and I'm a satisfied customer. Most of her charm comes from a blend of innocent cuteness, teasing yet not overdone pose, unusual color scheme and various viewing angles.

The little bit of teasing she's doing seems consistent with her personality, and like you said, I like how nothing about the figure really goes over the line. The color scheme is one of the best things about the figure. Sometimes beach figures can be very bland and nondescript, but the non-standard color of Konomi's outfit really draws attention to her.
