Megahouse: 1/8 - Kizaru "Borsalino" Portrait of Pirates (P.O.P.)Megahouse: 1/8 - Kizaru "Borsalino" Portrait of Pirates (P.O.P.)Review

RaithosRaithos9 anno/i fa
Hello dear readers, Raithos here! It's been a while since I've done a review, but I'm back! Welcome to my review on the "Kizaru" (Borsalino) Portrait of Pirates (P.O.P.) figure from Megahouse!

Kizaru completes the "admiral trio" of "Aokiji" (Kuzan),"Akainu" (Sakazuki) and himself "Kizaru" (Borsalino). The three great Marine Admirals stand at the top of the Marines, and are considered the strongest fighters in the Marine Core and the World Government. The only ones above them are the Fleet Admiral (Sengoku, and now currently Akainu), The Commander-in-Chief of the World Government (Kong) and the leaders of the World Government that reside at The Holy Land Mariejois (The Gorosei). The three Admirals are most commonly refereed to by their nicknames which they have garnered based off of their devil fruit powers; their outfits match their respective powers as well. Aokiji the "Blue Pheasant" dons a sleek blue and white suite and harnesses the power to control Ice. Akainu the "Red Dog" dons a sharp blood red suit with black gloves and has control over magma. Kizaru the "Yellow Monkey" dons a flashy striped yellow and amber suit and has control over light itself.
Each admiral has a variety of powers, techniques, fighting capabilities and marines at their disposal. They are able to initiate Buster Calls by themselves and can also use "Haki".

"Kizaru possesses the power of the Pika Pika no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit. As a Logia-user, he is able to let objects pass through him and reconstruct his body from energy particles. He is capable of moving and attacking at the speed of light, and all of his attacks are based on the element of light; such as firing energy blasts from his fingertips or feet with extreme precision. His power is very destructive, causing huge explosions and easily destroying buildings. He also has the ability to reflect himself, essentially moving from one location to the next at the speed of light. The Pika Pika no Mi is a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows the user to create, control, and transform into light at will, turning the user into a Light Human (光人間 Hikari Ningen). "Pikapika" is an onomatopoeia of glimmering or shining light. In the Viz Manga and FUNimation subs, it is called the Glint-Glint Fruit. It was eaten by Borsalino, better known as Admiral Kizaru.
- derived from (One Piece Wiki: Borsalino)

One of the best examples of the range of Kizaru's power is shown in his fight Against "The Dark King" Silvers Rayleigh at Shabody Archipelago, his fight against some of the Supernovas in that same area, and again during numerous events at the Marineford War.
Kizaru's three main attacks: Yata no Kagami (八咫鏡), Ama no Murakumo (天叢雲劍) and Yasakani no Magatama (八尺瓊曲玉) are taken from the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan.
In the Silvers fight, Kizaru uses: Yata no Kagami (Sacred Mirror) and Ama no Murakumo (Blade of Light): www.youtube.com...
In the Marineford War, Kizaru uses various techniques to fight pirates - most notably Yasakani no Magatama (The Sacred Jewel Attack). He uses it here several times to fight hordes of pirates, as well as Marco the Phoenix. He then uses it a last time against Trafalgar Laws submerging submarine in a pursuit type of attack after the latter flees from the end of the Marineford War with an unconscious Luffy.

With Kizaru being my favourite out of the three, I decided to do a review on his figure since I'm rather fond of him. I'll be going over the box, and all the different attachments Borsalino comes with (and he does have many). I'll also focus on his attachments in regards to his main attacks and overall composure, I'll also be including a mini review of his WCF (World Collectable Figure) as well. So without further adieu lets get into it:

The Box
The box is rather large, it needs to be in order to house Kizaru and all of his attachments. Since he has several arm and hand attachments, his cape/jacket, sword, hat and devil fruit effect parts... he actually needs a large box to hold it all in. Usually I'm annoyed with the size of the boxes Megahouse chooses for it's figures (especially in the P.O.P. line), but with this figure it's clearly justified. Megahouse went to town with Kizaru, and really made a complete figure here.
The box has a nice large window on the front that gives you a complete view of Kizaru in his box. This is a nod towards MIB (Mint in Box) collectors that don't like to take their figures out of the box as you get a pretty good view of him in it.

Across the right side we have a nice large graphic of Kizaru with his blade of light, and also standing posed with his Black Den Den Mushi. The back of the box displays nice large graphics of the figure shot from several front angles, holding his blade of light and again posed with his almost iconic "Black Den Den Mushi arm out" stance. The left of the box features a silhouette of the back of the figure adorned in his Admirals jacket, as well as Kizaru performing one of his signature attacks (the Sacred Jewel attack - Yasakani no Magatama (八尺瓊曲玉).

Overall, the box features a nice gold/yellow and black motif throughout the exterior with amber/yellow card on the inside. The box is straightforward and to the point, nothing too extravagant but also nothing too dull. With a large window on the front and smaller ones on each side as well as the top, a complete view of the figure is possible from within the box. A great plus for MIB collectors or those that just generally want to keep the figure in box after displaying it for a bit.

Box: 9/10

Onto the Packaging. The packaging is well done in this setup. There are two layers of plastic shells: one houses the main figure, the blade of light, his hat, two arm attachments and a hand attachment. The second shell is comprised of his Admirals jacket and 3 separate arm attachments. The base is centered in the middle of the shells at the bottom. The packaging does it's job by housing all of its parts as well as providing a secure cover for the figure and its elements, while also allowing for maximum visibility within the packaging itself. It's a bit tricky to separate the shells with some of the small parts, but once you do it once or twice it's pretty simple to take him in and out of the box/packaging.

Overall Packaging: 9/10

The sculpt of Kizaru is great. The figure is tall, lean and slender, with all parts sculpted accurately. You can see this from the details in the buckles of his shoes, right down to his hands, and even the little Black Den Den Mushi he wears on his left wrist.

Attention and focus to sculpt are quite apparent, from his nicely sculpted amber coloured glasses to his hooked nose. The head is on a ball joint, and can swivel around pretty much 360 degrees.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428599.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428598.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428597.jpeg

The Kizaru sculpt is on the money. The face LOOKS like Kizaru, no complaints about his facial or bodily sculpt. In a sense it's hard to mess up the Kizaru sculpt since it is basically comprised of just his suit, jacket, and various effect parts. However, Megahouse still did a good job.
Megahouse was sure to put a focus onto his exceptionally long arms and legs which he is known for. Surprisingly nothing is out of proportion either, Kizaru's parts are all a complete fit for him as well. The Blade of Light is as big as he is, which is accurate since it is portrayed as exceptionally large in the anime during his battle with Rayleigh. The Admirals coat is also sculpted nicely to fit the frame of his body. The coat is elongated into almost a cape-like appearance and widens out near the bottom. It has kanji on the back meaning "Justice" and comes complete with yellowish gold cuffs. The coat fits a little loosely on the figure, with a small amount of bending near the top it can fit Kizaru just fine.

Overall Sculpt: 9/10

The paint job on Kizaru has received mixed responses from several collectors. I myself think the paint job is great (but that is for my own piece). Some collectors have expressed a paint flaw in the stripes on his suit, particularly around the collar and towards the bottom of the suit. I myself don't seem to have this issue as bad as others, but it is a flaw to be noted:

A couple examples of sub par paint jobs, photos courtesy of LEAVENO1BEHIND, and BAIRON16
Leaveno1: http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Leaveno1behind1328995064.jpeg, Baron: http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/600/Bairon161335055091.jpeg

- In these examples you can note the sharpness of the pinstripes is not quite there, instead they seem to sort of sloppily blur into the the next set of stripes.

Another notable issue with the paint-job is the colour scheme used int he figure. Under different lighting conditions the figure can appear to resemble the colour scheme from the Anime, but in indoor lighting conditions or just regular lightning conditions, one can observe that that the yellow/amber colour mix is actually yellow and light brown. This is a bit of a disappointment and can be seen as a flaw in the paint job, just considering the fact that the colours are duller than they need be. (In subsequent photos, I am able to achieve his proper colour scheme, but that's only due to altering my camera's exposure and shooting settings).

Outdoor lighting (courtesy of Leaveno1):
http://s1.tsuki-board.net/image/Leaveno1behind1328994948.jpeg, Indoor lighting (Myself):http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428673.jpeg

- As you can see the yellow is vibrant and sharp outside, with the caramel undertone also seemingly lighter. In almost a replica of lighting conditions except on an indoor level, the colours are noticeably a shade darker. Megahouse could have done a slightly better job balancing out the paint colour pallet mixes for the pinstripes in order for the caramel colour to seem a bit lighter, more closer to almost an amber/orange.

Due to not staying in the lines and a slight colour imbalance I'll give the paint an 8/10.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428586.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428585.jpeg

The range of poses Kizaru can undergo is great. This range is aided by the various arm/hand attachments that allow for a few dynamic poses to be produced. Being a fixed pose static figure, due to the range of arm attachments he has, Kizaru can be brought to life in a variety of ways. You can pose him how we first see him in the Anime (with the Black Den Den Mushi), doing a thumbs up, doing an "OK" sign with his either hand, or even doing his signature moves (Yasakani no Magatama and Ama no Murakumo).

Unfortunately Kizaru doesn't come with the hands to allow him to do his third signature technique the Yata no Kagami. Still with the numerous arm, and hand attachments and the wonderful surprise addition of his fedora, Kizaru is still a must have for anyone that likes him or the P.O.P. line in general.

The fedora was actually a surprise reveal prior to the release of Kizaru. A few days before his release a magazine scan of the figure showed him with his fedora. Generating a bit of a buzz as to whether or not the figure would come with it. Upon release, (when official pictures started popping up from various webshops and blogs) it was revealed that Kizaru did in fact come with his trademark Fedora from his Vice Admiral days.

The Blade of Light, is a noticeable icon that's included with Kizaru, if not for the fact that it's the embodiment one of his signature attacks; but for it's sheer size. The blade is literally the size of the figure itself. It's quite a nice addition:

The blade IS as tall as Kizaru himself, around 25cm almost 30cm!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428627.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428629.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428628.jpeg
(The blade is separated into two pieces: the hilt and blade. The hilt connects to the main blade just under the circle of light, it's only connected via a very thin piece of plastic (inserted into Kizaru's hand) therefore increasing it's probability to break given either:
- Forced stress on the plastic from trying to push the connecting pieces in too deep/too firmly or a sudden impact causing the plastic connector pieces to snap under the pressure).

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428639.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428632.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428631.jpeg

A point of notable concern about the blade though is it's fragility. While handling it myself I have noticed this, but upon initial release of Kizaru, several reports started popping up from various sources about Kizaru's sword breaking. At first I thought that the collectors were just handling the figure too roughly or the figure had fallen from a height etc. (which are plausible causes). However, upon dealing with my own Kizaru I came to realize this problem and to know how to work around the fragility of the blade. Just be careful that the attachments near the hilt are not pushed in too tightly into the receiving sockets in his hands or the blade can be pinched into a pressure point where it could break. Also be very careful of the figure falling even from a small height with the blade in hand, or it has a high probability of breaking. This is a structural design flaw that couldn't really be avoided (the only other way would have been to make the holes in Kizaru's hands bigger to accommodate more of the blade) so I don't place any blame towards Megahouse on this one. Simply put: be careful with the blade or you'll break it. Other than that it's a wonderful addition to Kizaru, and it really adds that extra touch to make him (in my opinion) the best out of the three Admiral figures.

The figure also comes with several devil fruit effect parts that simulate his body turning into light. The parts include two arm attachments with a faded transition in paint from solid colours to a translucent yellow, accompanied by two hands (one a fist, and one an open palm hand in a "stop" gesture also in translucent yellow). The latter also comes in solid colours for both the arm and hand parts.

Kizaru also comes with hand attachments to perform the Yasakani no Magatama. I hoped he would have come with some sort of light effect parts that could have been placed inside the hands so that they could simulate the attack charging up in the palms of his hands (sort of like this or this), but the addition of the hands is enough.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428626.jpeg http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2012/05/14/428624.jpeg

Due to the numerous arm attachments and several poses you can get out of Kizaru, I'm giving his pose-ability a 10/10. Keeping in mind the limitations of him being a fixed pose static figure, you can STILL get variation out of him which is pretty cool.

The Base

The base is simple and straightforward as almost all P.O.P. bases are. The base is a thin octagonal piece of plastic that bores the Marine Logo, his name, and the title "Justice Marine"
Interestingly enough the base does not refer to him using his formal title of "Admiral" at all. Instead using the term "Justice Marine".
The base is simplistic and coloured in a nice vibrant golden yellow. It gets it's job done superbly.

Overall Base score: 9/10

Final Thoughts

I'm not going to make a category for it or anything but the figure is extremely enjoyable to photograph and own in general. From the cocky sneer of a grin on his face to the numerous effect parts he comes with. Kizaru is a joy to pose and display. - Enjoyment 10/10
All in all the Kizaru P.O.P. figure fulfilled all of my expectations and requirements. It's of ample size, very detailed, bears close resemblance to his appearance in the animation, comes with numerous effect parts, and his fedora to boot. Complete with a good looking box with nice large graphics, Kizaru is one of the best in my collection.

- Ample Size
- Lots of Attachments
- Fedora!

- Paint job can be lacking in the pinstripe suit (especially around the collar)
- Blade of light is fragile, and must be handled with care or it can break too easily
- Colour pallet is somewhat dull

And there you have it! My One Piece: Portrait of Pirates (P.O.P.) Kizaru Review, thank you for reading!

Kizaru World Collectable Figure (WCF) Mini Review
- Volume 14, Series Number: 115

This WCF comes in a set of 8 along with Akainu, Aokiji, Little Oars Junior, Coby, Ace (in chains), Sentomaru, and Sengoku.

The box is pretty standard, giving you a graphic of Kizaru on the Front and right side. The "Wanted" poster that lists the other figures in the series is on the left side and the back and bottom are covered with standard company information.

The figure itself comes in a fixed pose sitting position with a throne-like chair to accompany him (as seen when the Admirals are first shown gathered together at the war of Marineford just in front of Ace's execution platform). The throne is actually surprisingly nicely detailed and fits the figure just fine.

The thing I love about the WCF series is the amount of detail placed into such small figures. The suit is accurately coloured and painted, with minimal flaws in paint on the entire figure. The face is accurately sculpted and painted, depicting Kizaru with his hooked nose, amber shaded sunglasses and thin goatee. The attention to detail is surprisingly welcome. The only issue I have with it is the three black lines placed on his forehead for an emphasis in wrinkles. Other than that he's definitely one my favourite WCF figures period.

Another interesting thing I discovered about him is that the fedora included with the POP can actually fit the WCF extremely well! It looks like it was made just for the WCF, and it's a very fitting touch!

Overall Thoughts:
Overall it's one of those WCF that I saw and was instantly taken with. For a trading figure it has great paint and sculpting, and manages to capture the details of the P.O.P. in a scant 8 cm frame!
I can say that I had way more fun with this figure than I should. His sitting position allows him to sit atop the shoulders and limbs of larger scaled figures which can lead to some fun shots...

Box- 8/10: Not much to say about the box, pretty standard
Packaging- 8/10: Again the packaging is a standard plastic sheet with pockets for each component of the figure (base, support pole, throne, and figure)
Sculpting- 10/10: Super accurate for such a small figure
Painting- 9/10: Almost no flaws in the paint-job, again a wonder for such a small figure
Posing- 10/10: Simply for the fact that the figure can basically "sit" on pretty much anything it gets a perfect for pose-ability
Base- 10/10: A step away from the conventional blue circle base with an addition of his Admiral's Throne to sit on. The figure can either be seated on the throne on the base, or just on the throne by itself, the base isn't even a required piece!

Overall WCF Score: 9.2/10

Oh, finally you've finished with his review... and it's awesome! :D
The writing was very good, you explained everything well, used different categories and a good use of the pictures + the surprise that you also made a review for the mini daddy. d(^-^
I really enjoyed reading it. ;)
But I liked something a lot, I thaught only I would know that he might wears a Virgilio Dorsé Fedora hat from Borusarino~ (Borsalino xd). I added this a long time ago in a One Piece wiki, when I found it out. But that was a good idea,.. teach'em ! Go out and teach'em that our pimp daddy Ki Zaru wore the most famous hat a long time ago. (Bogart from Casablanca also wears one, other film stars too. ;))

Ice time! Thank you for such an informative comment. That's a very interesting tie in to Kizaru!

I added this a long time ago in a One Piece wiki, when I found it out. But that was a good idea,.. teach'em ! Go out and teach'em that our pimp daddy Ki Zaru wore the most famous hat a long time ago. (Bogart from Casablanca also wears one, other film stars too. ;))
