Great Figure, Amazing Service, Fantastic Price!

Just how much more can the market bear.

I was new to collecting back in 2012 and let's face it I was naive with some purchases. I managed to buy a bootleg with my very first purchase. I way over paid for some figurines as I did not know about AmiAmi pre owned or Mandrake. I was a learning curve but I got through it fast.

As I scroll through the AmiAmi pre order section I am looking at the cost the new listings I am amazed at how the price for figurines have gone up in 5 years. Back in the day you could get a decent 1/8 1/7 1/6 figurine for between 7000 to 10000 Yen tops for the most part. there were exceptions but you could still build up your collection at a decent pace and have quality figurines.

Scroll uo down next page and I am seeing prices of 11000 yen 13000 yen 24000 yen for 1/8 - 1/6 figurines.

11000 Yen 1/7

14500 Yen 1/6

24800 Yen 1/7 scale

That surpasses my 1/4 Bunny budget. I remember when I said to myself no 1/4 figurines cause they are 17000 yen - 25000 yen on pre order. Most I find were between 17000-20000 yen.

19500 Yen 1/4

19500 Yen 1/4

I feel like I am getting more bang for my buck getting the larger figurines. Now that is me of course and opinions will differ I am sure of that.

I am wondering as a consumer just how much more can the market bear these prices. When will the customers start to say that's I can't afford this hobby anymore. I myself make a decent living but the way I now buy figurines is way more prudent then when I first started. 10- 20 a year is where I have found myself in the last 2 years. That is how I have managed to keep collecting. If I got everything that tickled my fancy I would be broke.

What do you think the market can bear?

= )

My first scale figure was 4k yen, and with the exchange rate at the time I think it came out to 60-70USD for me. This was in 2009 I believe.

The prices are ridiculous nowadays and I can't justify it anymore. 10k was the max for super detailed, high quality figures. Now it's 10k minimum for a girl standing there in a simple bikini. If not for smaller items, I'd be done with the hobby.

Size doesn't mean everything. A figure like ITEM #179391 is absolutely worth its price tag simply because of the incredible detail and work put into it. When you buy art, you aren't paying for the supplies, you're paying for the dedication, work and imagination put into it.

That said, when there is hardly any work or imagination put into a figure and it is put out at 11000 yen, it does piss me off too. I mean look at the work and imagination put into ITEM #96908 and how cheap it is (6600 yen!). Now you have to pay twice as much for a plain looking boring figure. That figure was made just 5 years ago.

back in 2007 the price is 2000-6000yen and as long as you stick to big brands like koto or maxfactory the quality is well better than the now ones and they are stable.

dun ask why if it is 20000 yen average now. as long as dumbasses are paying no matter what they we will not be surprised if one day buying a dollfie is cheaper than buying a plastic figure.

quality nowadays are way way worse too, including the past great maxfactory themselves. and now people think the quality is higher than past lel.

see the problem.

The market will definitely survive without your money bc the west isn't the intended target. And the japanese are doing the statement above since the 80s why can't you people do the same?

Aye pal I'll just work 70 hour weeks on my £8 an hour and get loads of figures I never see on account of being at work all day. Top idea.

when retail hits 20000 for scales, it will be too much unless it is gurranteed piece of art and colletors item. need to cut back and order only absolutely needed things. also going to look into other things that will be relatively less hard on wallet like custom bjds.

I'd like to add on by saying raising the prices also tends to raise aftermarket. Sure, some figures bargain bin or stay pretty close to their release amounts but some prices are ridiculous.

Personally, I will 100%, hands down, pay up to $800 USD for a MASSIVE (1/3, 1/4, etc) statue that's limited/exclusive/etc, and do a payment plan. However, I refuse to pay $200+ USD for a 1/8. It just makes missing out on a preorder scary for me.

nyugvo6 (2 mese/i fa) #27821932The US p-bandai store doesn't have 1% of all their stuff still, and I don't understand why they'd open a store with no stuff to sell... How hard would it be to just give the site an english interface and start shipping worldwide?

Do you have professional e-commerce experience?

It's one thing do this in a small, homogenous country with tight logistical infrastructure. It's another thing altogether to extend that across a whole ocean to a bunch of customers with very different expectations and standards.

This kind of stuff takes time. And for a country as risk-averse as Japan, doubly so.

citrus (2 mese/i fa) #27820993I think you're being sarcastic, but that's okay. The US Premium Bandai store (us.p-bandai.asi...) just opened a few months ago with a soft launch of three items. It went pretty well, and now they're selling a few new things.
Yes, it was sarcasm. I would be really happy IF, and if I had full access to p-bandai, with cheap shipping. The US p-bandai store doesn't have 1% of all their stuff still, and I don't understand why they'd open a store with no stuff to sell. Plus the shipping cost is a complete deal breaker. It's cheaper to use proxy sites and they grant you full access to exclusive stuff.
It feels like they were testing the waters and completely forgot about it, or they were just "politely" telling outsiders off with "here's your premium site, enjoy."
How hard would it be to just give the site an english interface and start shipping worldwide? I think most of their stuff, esp the ones I'm interested in will never be available outside japan because the licensors are not okay with it being available.

nyugvo6 (2 mese/i fa) #27820777Thanks for the lengthy info. Can you tell me how can I access the premium webstore from europe, and how can I order my toku, precure, shf, a.g.p. figures and dx toys? How's the shipping? Still 40+ bucks?
I think you're being sarcastic, but that's okay. The US Premium Bandai store (us.p-bandai.asi...) just opened a few months ago with a soft launch of three items. It went pretty well, and now they're selling a few new things.

Premium Bandai HK and TW have been around for a while, but the SG and CN stores also opened fairly recently. I imagine Premium Bandai will open an EU store some time in 2018 or 2019, but I have no idea how large the audiences are for Bandai goods over there, so it could be farther off.

In any case, all the products still ship from Japan (with region-appropriate labels affixed), so you'll probably pay the same shipping in the future as you do now. (Maybe even more, because Bandai definitely won't under-declare on customs, unlike some proxies you may have encountered.) But getting your new figures will be much less of a hassle than it is now.
