MaakieMaakie6 giorno/i faReview
Hello! I am back again with some Japanese DIY kit reviews! Today we will look at the Popin' Cookin' set titled 'Omatsuri'. This set has multiple snack foods from the Japanese Matsuri festival: candy apples, chocolate bananas, corn on the cob and fries!

Cute and colorful packaging as always! What attracted me to this set was the high variety of items it will make!

The backside shows instructions that are also easy to follow if you can't read Japanese. But to make everything even more easier, the manufacturer Kracie has English instructions on their website of almost all sets, inlcuding this one! Here is the link to the English instructions: www.nerune.jp/p...

The film holding all the parts of the set together shows cute artwork of a festival stall. This film can be cut off to use as a display plate for the finished candy!

This kit comes with:
- Plastic mixing tray with 4 pieces
- 5 wooden skewers
- A block of 'corn'
- Sugar sprinkles
- Plastic mixing spoon
- Candy apple powder
- Bag with 'corn kernels'
- Chocolate powder for the 'bananas'
- French fries powder
- Banana powder

That's quite a lot of parts!

As with most Popin' Cookin' kits you only need to add water. You do also need a pair of scissors and some clear tape if you want to make the display and the packaging for some of the candy. I also recommend using a plate while making this kit (if you're not making this kit in your kitchen), because it could get a bit messy.

Making the kit

The front of the film is the festival stall and from the sides you can cut off a 'chopping board' and a cone to put the fries in.

Now, let's start with the kit itself! First up! Candy apples!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/WuA1tBLtjulcjpSEZs_MQdxBA8jHxO8kL0XRTjLc1SwbAv5r5TFyFHolA7RVxBeMlZreyYPeCxOz1yofAT2AVEJmKN7P9Um5y3OA0X8wPCYybjNX4A05OPrf-fIncCOXIodzDD8iWBrS45fpAgU9uEb6KB_2TaQwFaRFvqw2fF5q1Kc6XWeG3dDQdkqN0BfaeK5lZroRqBwsyYeW2aw5f3yWNywdsp3r7Xuk5szOcs5SXuyQ4CuwtePFlMyzBhM-FOc1I3mPcmPw-J3Dm6EUQHkdgBnMElKjJ66PzAnFyOLwGaKZI9NNcDZT6ja5hfp8Ef2wiIlJ2cUwRhk0lRvaR9baP46DPCvYWdKmtJL_dseVGjTH3QQ2AQRFRIVsCHH92V-x0UfxqZEbVyqggEd52Ylb1SF9NGv3AOe_MwQYMYFZGounrv4X1sjX4urkK6ku8h49XdzHxrZhn6gh4fLJJhsZBGNepKpmIVTPuipVcmk_whWs80MhgPQ-FGEEow1yIZI1iG8Ak0czuWx2BsheZ9NoPby3BRAXRc3NIAmjADY7NVhoJvfApskHSWwsJH7qWsIk2pJHPiCW-AFa8jw9EjuEnMTLBugLebFUs8TYzQ=w1295-h971-no?.jpg

The apples have a bit of a jello-like structure and need to harden in the mold for at least 10 minutes.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/V3uRqWJ0fffNubfMvXVhp1EkTwXSBtYWDxGa0KdYv7llxAMcDW0zrQyXTubX8SgP617_AcM3HvgQiDJdHZUIpi9KeLBfKErpa8UVThqjAUZX_i2Ebq52lMsCsWBw9nQtf9Lipangjhd08YjoBFWs-oQrjreTm8_GLLnHB51jhVhmU9jCA15C4ual3q0hv-R18f-yeXmdGls6z2b-tfBc5V7v047_KZDZlpOh19C68Qib_0yt9YFL8lx8ZjpmGA0i48ckMQPCS9Pk3megV3riX8S-BPyVNexmER-xI_DEC80TYw4-iESpsEgj1IzmBQ9ItGoxnzVbsYhn3Xwe6wmkH3yQlKzxIf8xs94a_p6fFY3OgcrhBuJxN56JOBDBXgmRNkcxEcd5HXU2CzY3jya9QnaAB9rRWjfZ41PSLpMtpbFeH7tb0b18zuCJDvEQ4R4__WittI1kmhp31MX7pIKQQlxzuzcV18TTOKPSlXTPG72-AIcr7kYExIqKkfn1yPFdLVIitHTsZw_MR7Xw9DDiMURW9DbdkRcWbptQvuFjfkbaMaKWRXr6tsdZpo8rtL9sDdLeO5hzs7TkhPQS-n52obEo5sAJlqBlBA4emPK9XQ=w1295-h971-no?.jpg

While I was waiting on the apples, I started making the french fries!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/IndH-81kdud6X9vzKM_7y9D-Oj-VWf5GVwy2AaycyhhMZl9Zuvr3GnbqYlpIeN3Yqfdv9u2fC2-fCTjQxf1U4u-EIEx6fwFI5cVG1Y_lhDyGXXL5_2O6A2UghB-ydiyTAV9ywqnzOWcvXAclsng7w8A4iAYzu-3LY_-FdzdoLH8Kn9fGz2yNzGXhw7ydg6f1iPnzneVX-BJsfJobf3yaL0ck9dItmpMmxUG5CJPzRy0DOANj3uZSC7b2pP9VCNuq3uxufwMQhvQAccw1n_3VVLT4VnG8oESiXtHSzfpx2TmST7GNLFItI2-P8StSMKeTmcDpubERRNz7yKU-BJYYChivSs8uQRZ2Mu2Tr7naDDGFPYkK_4gSj9wT0YZxLXzNdZIuk8P383FSD2csHkQYV-E9ZDip2agOjTGP-WJ7MZ4_Bj-QNXWugWWAYhHxO5B_LbV4Q1re2UlgjjPSM9ZJjEZ5P4IEJZLp7NtFfE0KbV15BUqqOdQ1IxkjEOKLmE5clRejgAz6VXWpU4NoQ02LHs_mJbSPddnQTR6WKTRdrCAHqI37vbS8m_a5i4HQwQ9gGbG2M1VNgLPlNnJqOhwLghCapzo2Noe39uGk21q75w=w1295-h971-no?.jpg

Even after adding some extra water, I still had way more powder than finished candy. I decided to stop here, because I didn't want to make the mistake of making the candy too wet. Like what happened with one of my first DIY kits ever blog/18923 when I made runny rice. I got this shape in the fries with one of the molds, then I needed to 'cut' along the lines with my spoon.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/bgwHNgaJMUXWk7P8zLu0DjrsvU8Xsd_bu2rV09rDbkAzxnC4LvYYc6S-DFXSoKvSpbo1RhZyFCMDz4LFsZo_2ZTVCkHGyTermLPLdNC9CAgj_Yfq-fQwSXkJyMwbOdGCyc8qPg86-PsQpqnh85Z0a1OQa489p4SBpjpgec89EDkrzbVfoJTio1ZFXiezC-zuUXMI6_nICAU3SICW4OxUJk6WoGt8EX5U8HXHDq7AfGFgsVyYSgAp2T_jZ11Afcag7Ejb_lTR4U0q6KeNSN85JSd4Ipawfg-HOlx61gDvLY7rbAgjb6lrqRG5J2P2aA3izoRhiOFUA-zu5SeQxzJ4C4TqYsnfgeJDHBtEibDvSc8LOMdxe9rZQ7s7w_9-wURomurCvK5ttJLduIe72O8K6_jWHlbh2UysfJQgStcdSSkDD6NVPTwzM8I2KcN_wKSZzjZZAvItRTp5hQ1t7IBCw-LGMyYXYZuMWH4bemj2uPMfOykyHJuvFEwFF_jh1sY2Db4k1-k6A7YqCW0JAEmnK0WNk9WKkJidR83ZTwA64nOivQt5mT_4ZQe4jvMSjOWL-iq-K7g2bESMc5ymGbVddZmh6vE76Am5vvn5HBGdhw=w1295-h971-no?.jpg

And here are the finished fries! I brushed most of the powder off, to make it look somewhat decent. My fries are still too dry, though...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/g0aNz3_L-xHYcaX92sPcUO7E9KQjL4fPBSzYgXgbS4mJUTDh9ZmdrFyoAzVCmDWjLX5K6P3avvRCrrK1Lc1XTHFT2KmobeJfkso79LIT40whZynXNscCQ-B2pIZ2XD4IcpBtPAREQB33L-UjlIVBtO0kuQ3Q7LEilXXSE9JrqplsGp2hRHpBzmQN3NX9MZW7tHOXSYMKB50GDVZ4Ui_CK_bDIqpLKocgG-_J-nhVJ8M9yWyN9V3NJ4eYtWBBhy5pguGIgLvMH5OT2uKkovecN-e9n6tc78HONo99xsnIMMXARqBQkwXyZEPJRyhVQs84gjTAjpckNJHyyiEFwTx2BdQ5cKq-kT8gK3sJ0sXQlqdyL6L1vTb8t9aTaU37RS9m2sXGi3GLkhIVL6DSwNfkKGyAcDvz0NNeKIR2CfuniQBe7HEQyL439uZVTCwYEch98F4NW588cC7-Gen5vwEgOIIXsYRHZyuu0AXh1rtrrxPH9uKk92UOiKnchasozhhDuv_6Wox58hHDJDuI-2SH6V5uYmCLR9YmDQqZ8G16Q1NBnN8P5bpEFdZSo0zDmML8qI2caTw7mRpV0-UEdUATHMLbM33nAeVi0T8vCIKmJw=w1295-h971-no?.jpg

Next up was the corn! It was very stiff way harder than I expected to roll out!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/cn9Fhm-DFKi4cQk1CRM4eJmU0gsmbX2KsKwRh4Oi8VpUIRoq8rfk63hdwxPwLEKlXQCT9BsOp40YH7UqNiUUZR3VAwIjwdGZC1etKsqGYU3SNlUtJpTC-L4DkE723YHskbVfyxE1fVZFcAqGWefMLK8KJDstJWrOiCKMsOahHasiUpxYvpLUSwKCB9NeqJH5qqtLJXnFAg6YnkuEjdYE0y0BJ2YDEBdfycUgiYaNLHyavpiGuIEPtk2SUKcdmPZUdVTwrAbNDJyCevQ4bQ2CUf0a13Z6k3IXgL0adKu0MCruIIXVViRYMAa8uXE7z8VC-4JpBIXxLW66GRWSfRR4VnNIbWEvOQQ05PYmxrQXqFBMKABf_DgZhybknp3k-0IN1rBdcxx-kaKgG5AcKmKQoIFbvZBCYAgLqNUX49EWa0QdWDwdcg8TJY_yKFDiAIIwCrbD8yowFXOH5CLsa6awTl8zbtAt5Afoseq1EXTNs0-GZBVMR3dVeWX-35G2g5fQt0Yzy-Iy4ATbDHvbfL-ea1OlirmZzrFMo6YiVkXW_WCl6WGVteWw36xR-ppE3T6vDwkp4qy1U5VHQwWsRe97_hYAxiGUil17quQ6jORJhA=w729-h972-no?.jpg

Now for one of the most fun parts of this kit: Adding the corn kernels to the corn cob! You had to lay them out like this in one of the molds and then firmly press while rolling the cob over them.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/on_l3E8A0rUgSBnkO3mG6H5V7_6qRVuTeiqPq4t1TwsDmEIhlOcQp3DmfIJa9cyksXe5Tk6U_uRXFoL4i-Z62nljo3gFHtAaZqkEq1EFNRfhjSk-s-QLsWt8nlMd09l8dffY_pbmKQ15qsTEOnmM9u3FW4oQNAKEemgSmsIGB-lP7gu9gDPNxGtRrEpWfamhG5PruaUgXbYr__IFk3ZmPsg0Sw3wDSEoEAbhNJz7owvZ80TZ3vPdh8GdLQxQZbCh987mirHPzTbQas3P9xw6z6SEaPhHVuvRuIK2qtWLLSB9C94ZxiXq9MaOWM5QAlvcmwGYju0neavvCHY4Iw3g0Cqdxxe3H7X1z10FeN5x8aJj1XmgdNZgsqt0jZ4JjQPbLtLb8JsnGQ8WejFRdfqBg3Ac6GeleE6luiQaCVTG0D7cMSJaFQuyJJTEpEuweXgAbSJ7XzXqUEjh9FsP3kC8QIJ0BirfUCNud5QJMl6bL-x056FLIySiocg7MkcUuPLA57adsm3tXAwDYzKhGq-g5mLiu8dKFJ5q3p7S-krhkLiJG8uIb1jg-BkM0FSiptyqWwHjURbPOref5yl68aLczPmKDi897YgXcXKlGxeMXA=w1295-h971-no?.jpg

Even with using a lot of force, it was hard to make all the kernels stick to the cob. Still, the result is pretty cute right?

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Qe63M0UEI6GQJdgn7VmTGclq5pJxwChGRrcUxnnRfZqAZggY75voLScgZFBAr9DCCndrc4cc15pnYRvcct3LMzhO10ryaeDcmEtcKXmIjjUv2GeLg4fT2obgzeMPci7Mvn7sop4jiG9jVfDG6Ij6HntwyyO-PjJa5D1moB9mirTYu1O8ixvgFDAjoTvdVJ4iboK2pp7Iqpf1tsWBZ7IEZy-1MdhyJ8oR47LiX4oJns90W63YVP9FZVUwFd1iXPJgAZyv_pDw_oNj6Epcoim0ZpWkC1202vQXzOcXdJ-P7qnaxzK8jqokO8CmY0WllG_67vGnHXbEdeTDGoqxxIquhjXYjKgz70tzheY1ocyCI4TzPBmPw2Zq1xHtBbGXG9f9vgTOUxqqBwbFSixzg6Ws5gkXuNtsSeZyseMEVTqnJJWetR3qICwk536d9NaE3wq60px5V5UnTJMpXfgc-yPpODunMoX8nFCn_PsUZ2zgI6angVertLIDxJ3yK0uLrgCpU5H2Jn0F-TdsbnJO0M9iDq-2KGjraeBwvp99HVa43_2X3QOjJP681nltbodyG5ijE8ApA9K63Yu7Sv6avwY9XGfYQcSpeumCCbZ6v8igvw=w1295-h971-no?.jpg

Next up: The bananas!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/JRHx8yB39rqD80wRPAsuW9GMXWWqSS4dR-XffYN76qvpxerJZHAQdHFbrvdvo9gc2S080RP9pDbtmq16un9DlUZtSkzUjEsePqSOERP2yHSP2xX5HW7BEdjnnh14n4Jzzp6_w6zdVTJiumZjw68jmh4_jydxbkPbMnyevlndDQxPU2pqDeqgqWWSCJsjVCxW2UMmJTYxbco5zLujbRVB2cMgFN3W8JlL-QcIbQaZHlCfTAHWPksLTg2COWjvm8YSfE-Aqyct7dTr4YXmJYAfQO7oVH6fc1MnNOrjlk30eEd8K-n7jxOY70HZ_wfys64bJtMG8q4rbxY0WTop_brlHNN2k-IQRGYghfNW4dQTMXJ9A4HrGvXow8ms8HqaF_8AVvXHtKriGufg1QBcEnc93OQM7zyxuytRsku320ltxqw6WWAtqML7MfyGwxUK5EJ17qkhwdrOC9CnZ-C-rpZ-oRh383fgjs9qjJzFtqkJNL4UHqsmdg3uvHnKUVzsRY5h4NcFc9ExxG6OsR989UjuRiEAAoJ4B2BqA6nC2GoweWsYEZrPNtvipCuJv8aK493BmdSlEeacKL34nadc1EHzb50HALs6tWwyHI994OAWBg=w1295-h971-no?.jpg

It looks like a hot mess, but here are the bananas pushed into the mold. Interesting is that the banana mix was really looking like squashed bananas!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/qWVnkJpzCG8iwWwtNG_9waw6HX65OMyhXHbetaP1lqD6Osd5SwoRUkxLWUc_3cicVsnFtV1s4KHhUj7TGOGJLLLh8FVusBNbbA4aE3_gRQn4x7Q02MQmWmmzborBplY-c5Z-xOaZF18wRJe-rVN8jAJ-unxbjlRnebjjDe48w8JOKUahZEkMb9zZLpu8qJwVHZdzjoIS9lV_UHyFhWZUmVKXT47lMAyvj8XViSnlabecR1V1o2Jhw_fTDHx0V6hpdJi9ocXlFPkuW-F5iBKOcCjH-z5R1uRQjq9sxyx5Z0AEjX_tbeenTQH4MasXS7FFiGpkWqfsGKiCHZ3AzPmKL8feLfbkGJBg_ko4pic6qAA3qZJpjlSm8Fm1aKoUG35aGSz-eRJwnKiRpq9J9HOfyuyXDt9ur34lDXkE1hpiP65b7n23Lsnvw6jPCL1p4xgC-521smdaab3-a1DWZXgtFwoi94_QjrPFpyf3NJyuBdi-5cn0bhnZ5KiixCiVSIGHlJ16Hb5L9AUod_pfSp_b3Yk2M7I88sMFJIY5Fi1qUfo2VyDz6Y_0OAP82q_Z_aw83F945O1-WCGbwAsC78UhO4ALDkTcAU2Q2HstaEue1g=w1295-h971-no?.jpg

Mixing the chocolate powder mix, while on the left you see the result of the banana mold! Not perfect bananas, but pretty decent.

End result!

Dipping the bananas in the chocolate was quite easy. As for the sprinkles: They stuck to the chocolate right away, so no problem there!

The candy apples were easy to remove from their mold too, because the candy got a lot sturdier. I also had a lot of leftover 'corn kernels' (which are sugar pearls), so I dipped the apples into them. I pushed a bit into the candy apples top to try and give them the 'flattened top candy apple' look (example: www.candlemakin... ), but it was not very succesfull.

And here you have my full Matsuri Festival stand!

The taste

The corn: It was extremely chewy and not my type of candy. The corn itself was grape flavored with the kernels being sugar pearls. I did not like it much and did not finish them.

The french fries: They are pineapple flavored according to the packaging, but I did not taste much pineapple. Also did not like these much either...

The candy apples: They were nice and with an actual apple taste. I thought the sugar pearls were a nice add to them, but even the apple by itself was already very sweet!

The chocolate bananas: They have actual chocolate and banana flavor. The banana's texture was a bit strange to me, but the chocolate and the sprinkles were ok.

Overall I would say 2 pieces tasted decent and 2 pieces didn't taste good at all. Which is actually quite a high score for a DIY kit! Normally all of the pieces are way too sweet for my tastebuds!

Recommendable?

This kit was quite fun to make! Especially making the corn cobs was very interesting. If you are a sweet tooth you will probably like the taste too! If you just want to do a kit like this for fun, this is a good one to start with as you make many different types of candies. Also these molds seemed to work better than most other kits I have tried. Even though my results were not perfect, the foods were recognizable!

Thanks for reading my blog! My next blog will be an figure review of Wave's Kitano Sora figure ITEM #4927 !

willyg1982 (5 giorno/i fa) #28592641Thanks for telling me about this post. Enjoyable in the same way as the previous one.

No problem! And thanks! :)

Miaeka (5 giorno/i fa) #28594303The fries weren't really dry for me, just sort of powdery on top? I just went to my local Asian supermarket for the first time just now and they have a bunch of the kracie candy kits, they're just too expensive so I'll stick with getting them online...
(Ps if you give me the ref code I'll love you forever)

Yeah, that's what I meant, there was way too much powder, so the fries weren't fully 'absorbed' by the water (even after I added extra water). English isn't my first language. xD Thanks for confirming! :)

I sometimes see kits like this at cons too, but they are very expensive over here also. And you have to watch out, because a lot of sellers are known to not really watch the sell-by-date on their items... >.>

For a ref code I need your full name + e-mailaddress so I can send it! ^^ But it's for new customers only, so you'll probably need to make the order from a different e-mailaddress and/or PayPal than you normally order for it to work. :x Anyway, if you have those, you can send me an PM with the info! ^^

deyaro (5 giorno/i fa) #28600827I didn't read the last part of the article until after I had read the package. So my initial thoughts were "Grape flavoured corn? This stuff is edible?". Yeah...if someone offered me grape flavoured candy shaped like corn-on-the-cob I'd say "Pass".

The corn was also my least favorite part of the kit. It was overly sweet and not very grape-like. These kits are not known for having amazing flavors, they are mainly known for being fun to assemble. :)

Maakie (5 giorno/i fa) #28592016Oh man, both your corn and fries look better, haha! Btw, did you also have trouble with the fries being too 'dry'?
And jep, also Candysan for me! They don't seem to re-stock older sets much and rather move on to new ones. >.<

Maakie (5 giorno/i fa) #28591775Oh! Do you have pictures of your finished kit? Did you manage to make the corn better looking? xD
I can offer you a referral voucher for my go-to store, but they don't seem to have this specific kit in stock anymore. :/

Miaeka (5 giorno/i fa) #28591692This was my favourite kit ever, and I've tried quite a few. The overall fun and how the banana tasted like ACTUAL BANANA are some reasons why I'd definitely order these again (out of stock on my go-to site for Japanese candy tho :<)
