FREEing 1/4 Mikan YuukiFREEing 1/4 Mikan Yuuki

Today, we'll be reviewing a great big figure of a great little sister, FREEing's 1/4 scale Mikan Yuuki. Her bunny outfit means that a few shots below could be considered a little bit NSFW...

About the character: Mikan Yuuki is a character from the To Love Ru media franchise. Mikan is the younger sister of series protagonist and resident harem-attractor Rito Yuuki. She is very smart, independent, and reliable, and once Yami ENCYCLOPEDIA #1875 has a change of heart and decides not to eliminate Rito as planned (probably not, anyway), she and Mikan become good friends. Further, Mikan shows a little bit of a brother complex and she goes so far as to really tease Rito from time to time, even suggesting that they are not truly blood-related and could therefore get married. This combination of factors thus makes her what I would consider an archetype of what might be called the modern imouto character type.

Packaging----------8/10

The package itself is not too flashy, with a pretty high cardboard-to-window ratio. I'm not sure why FREEing picked that weird US Army-like stencil font for Mikan's name, though...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1524787425.jpeg

The box sides feature shots of Mikan from both the front and the back.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1524787428.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1524787431.jpeg

The back panel features a shot of Mikan from the angle she is ostensibly supposed to be viewed as well as a bunch of the requisite consumer warnings.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1524787433.jpeg

"Choking Hazard". I don't know why, but that struck me as being kind of funny, given the huge scale of this figure!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1524787437.jpeg

This is of course a 1/4 scale figure, and the box is correspondingly large. The box measures 35 by 28 by 27 cm and figure+box weighs just over 1.1 kg, so plan on a nontrivial shipping bill. The figure in the shot below is the 1/6 scale ITEM #464638 to put the size of the box in perspective!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1524790700.jpeg

Note how the blister contains two large "bubbles"; one extends around her bunny ears, and the other around the heel of her shoe.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1524787439.jpeg

Base----------NA

Because of her kneeling pose, Mikan does not need a base nor does FREEing include one.

Posing----------9/10

Mikan's pose is one of my favorite things about this figure. The way she's glancing over her shoulder is quite a neat look, and it begs the question as to what exactly she's up to. Did she decide to try on this bunny suit and she's checking herself out in the mirror? Is she teasing her brother? Who knows, so let's have a look at Mikan.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239737.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239739.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239742.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239744.jpeg

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239734.jpeg

Really, the only negative regarding Mikan's pose is the fact that there is a fairly limited range of angles from which she's meant to be viewed, but on the other hand, the way she's looking over her shoulder and playing with her hair gives her a very flirty look and so I'd say that FREEing did just fine here.

Sculpting----------7.5/10
Painting----------7.5/10

This figure is all over the place in terms of the quality of its paint and sculpt. Mikan has some very neat features, but she also has a few quirks that you probably don't want to see on a figure whose suggested price was 22,000 yen. Thus, I'd say the overall quality of the figure is about average.

Mikan is so cute :). Her amber eyes are one of her key features, and while usually I am not a fan of blushing faces, I think it works here. Mikan is still an innocent girl after all, and I think the bunny outfit might elicit this type of reaction.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1524787444.jpeg

If I was going to be picky, I would note that her face looks maybe a little bit too round when she's viewed from straight ahead.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1524787442.jpeg

One of my biggest gripes with this figure can be seen in the shot below. When Mikan is viewed from her left side, it almost looks like her eyes are pointing in slightly different directions. Now, in fairness she is not really intended to be viewed from this angle, but this might be one of those things that, once noticed, cannot be un-noticed...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239750.jpeg

One of her bunny ears is standing straight up, while the other folds over at almost a right angle. It makes for quite a neat look. If you really look close, though, you can see that the width of the orange trim on the ears is not totally uniform in places.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239751.jpeg

I've got a number of these 1/4 scale FREEing bunnies, and it seems to me that a common issue with all of them is that the headbands for the bunny ears are a little but too thick.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239753.jpeg

In the world of anime hair, natural brown hair is something of a rarity. Brown hair can be surprisingly tough to realize in figure form, so I think FREEing did fine on this front, as there is some color variation in Mikan's hair. Also, To Love Ru dates all the way back to the mid 2000's and so Mikan's spiky hair bun is more in line with the type of "impossible anime hair" that was popular during the late 90's and early 00's.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239755.jpeg

If I could change one thing about this figure, I might have made the scrunchie which keeps her hair bun together a color other than blue (orange or maybe even white). The blue just seems like a weird choice, and it doesn't really go with the color scheme of the figure.

There are a few spots in Mikan's hair where there were extra little bits of material as well as a couple of spots where some additional sanding might have been in order.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239758.jpeg

One rather neat element of this figure's design is that the chest area of Mikan's bunny suit looks to be a little too large for her. She is of course one of the more flat-chested characters in the To Love Ru cast, and unless she had a bunny outfit custom tailored, it seems inevitable that the fit of the suit would be much like this. I think this plays up the cuteness and innocence of her character, too.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239761.jpeg

FREEing did a good job sculpting Mikan's fingers and fingernails. Note the shiny pink polish on her nails, for instance.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239764.jpeg

The way Mikan is playing with her hair gives her a flirty look, but the way she's contorting her pinky finger looks really uncomfortable!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239766.jpeg

The suit is obviously a tight fit, as you can clearly see a suggestion of Mikan's navel. Additionally, FREEing did a really good job with the coloring of the suit; it's not a flat orange, and the yellow highlights really make the figure stand out, particularly when the light hits her just right.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239769.jpeg

I did not verify this with the measuring tape, but my eyes tell me that this figure has the highest bunny tail to body ratio of all the bunny figures in my collection! That's a good thing, as the huge bunny tail is quite eye catching!

The thong is another feature that will draw the eye, and as is the case with all the FREEing 1/4 bunnies, those are real fishnet stockings. Notice how the fishnets allow you to see the various contours of Mikan's body sculpt. This really draws attention to the sculpt of her thighs as well as where her thighs transition into her glutes.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239775.jpeg

One concern with the fishnets is that they may fray over time (in the shot above you can see one spot where the material on the seams had started to fray right out of the box!) and there's always a worry about snagging the fishnets, but they are definitely a good look for Mikan.

The thong does not pull a disappearing act, which is always a good thing. I will admit, however, that I'm not too sure how the thong+fishnets combination would work. Would the fishnets and the body suit be one piece, or would the fishnets be worn like pantyhose with the body suit going on over them? Since I don't own such an outfit, I can't be too sure :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239777.jpeg

Also, I like how FREEing sculpted Mikan's thighs. Since she is a petite girl, it would be easy to get lazy and ignore that part of the figure, so some credit is due there.

FREEing gives Mikan orange heels to match her outfit. The shoes are quite eye catching, but I would have liked to see just a little more detail on the shoes-maybe a different color for the heels/soles?

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239779.jpeg

Scale Comparison

At her highest point (the tips of her bunny ears), Mikan measures about 11.5 inches (29 cm) in height. Also, the way she's got her feet pointing in opposite directions means that Mikan will have a significant shelf footprint. She will occupy a space approximately 5 inches (12.5 cm) wide by 6 inches (15 cm) deep. If she were standing, it looks like Mikan would be about 14.5 inches (37 cm) tall. She is established to be 4'11" (149 cm), so the listed 1/4 scale is spot on.

Here we have 2x the Mikan with Max Factory's Mikan offering ITEM #464638. That figure is 1/6 scale, so you can see how even with the kneeling pose, the FREEing Mikan will be comparable in height to a 1/6 scale figure. I like how both figures feature Mikan fiddling with her hair, too :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1524790703.jpeg

Mikan with one of my favorite figures, Plum's Saki Nagatsuka ITEM #320011. Saki-chan is a large 1/7 scale for comparison.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239781.jpeg

The orange color of Mikan's outfit really makes her stand out, in part because you don't see all that many figures with such a prominent orange color scheme. Here is Mikan with another character that looks good in orange, Skytube's Hazumi Ohmune ITEM #464557. Hazumi is at the small end of 1/6 scale for comparison.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239783.jpeg

These two definitely have some similar features, and I really like how they look together! Amakuni's Beelzebub ITEM #349076 is a large 1/7 scale.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525239786.jpeg

Nowa's signature color is orange, and based on her expression, you could believe that she approves of Mikan's bunny getup :). Griffon's Nowa ITEM #5711 is 1/7 scale.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1525258205.jpeg

My current Mikan sub-collection. ITEM #464638 and ITEM #331830 are 1/6 scale, ITEM #166752 is 1/7, ITEM #446644 is 1/8-ish, and I'd say that Noodle Stopper Mikan ITEM #583727 is about 1/9. Also notice how much variance there is in the exact coloring of Mikan's brown hair from figure to figure!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1524790705.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Arguments for: Interesting pose with the way Mikan is peering over her shoulder, the bright orange suit makes for a very eye-catching figure, the fishnet stockings draw attention to some of the subtler elements of her body sculpt, and it's Mikan in glorious 1/4 scale!

Arguments against: Fairly limited range of optimal viewing angles, high price point, and there are a few QC quirks that you do not really want to see on a 22,000 yen figure.

Overall, I like this figure quite a lot, as I like Mikan, I like 1/4 scales, and some of the neater figures of the figure make me willing to overlook some of the little QC issues. If you are a Mikan fan, and you're ready to take that step off the cliff into 1/4 bunny hell :), I'd say that you should strongly consider adding this figure to your collection, particularly now that she can be had secondhand at a much more reasonable price point.

Availability (as of this writing)

Easy to find preowned.

Although there are counterexamples, most of these FREEing 1/4 bunny figures are not too hard to find preowned and there has been a fairly steady supply of these figures available through the usual preowned channels. Original retail was 22,000 yen, and I've seen prices of anywhere from 15,000 to 20,000 yen for a preowned Mikan. My B/B Mikan set me back 16,000 yen and at that price I'm satisfied that I got my money's worth. Keep in mind that shipping could add a significant cost on top of that price.

victorviper (4 mese/i fa) #36959871Marie will definitely go to the top of the review queue :). I just hope she doesn't look quite as "made up" in the finished figure as she does in the promo shots. It could be someone just got a little Photoshop-happy when processing the promo shots, and Max Factory's Mikan ITEM #464638 also looked the same way in her promo shots but turned out fine, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed...
I can't quite decide what I think about the Koto Marie. Sometimes I think it looks like a well-made figure, and other times I think there's something wrong with it. In particular, I can't quit shake the idea that her legs are wayyy too short relative to her torso, and as a result she looks like a dwarf, particularly when the skirt is removed. Maybe it's just the thick soles on her shoes messing with me...

Ah yes, it's mainly the lips I think with that Marie. I wouldn't be surprised if that 'make-up' is missng on the actual figure.

I have this same 'illusion' with other figures with wide dresses, but showing shoes. And even feel that when I sometimes see cosplayers in big gowns with shoes pointing out! But even when it's proportionate, if it bothers you in a figure, you're probably better of not buying it as it could be the main thing you would look at when you own her. ;)

You know, when I see that Marie and Honoka I find their posing so similar, that I personally don't feel like it's a 'you have to get them both' case. But I think there are way more people that find them to be really a pair, so that is just probably my personal taste. :P But regarding Marie, I really like both the Max Factory one and the Kotobukiya one. I would personally get those 2 first before deciding to plunge for the bunny/bunnies or not. :) I hope you will make a review of the Max Factory Marie!

victorviper (4 mese/i fa) #36801940Since all my 1/4's are in glass cases, I'm OK with FREEing not including bases with these kneeling 1/4's, but I guess if the figures were sitting on a stained/painted shelf, there is the possibility of staining/paint transfer. I'd never really given that too much thought before.
The slightly-too-big fit of the bunny suit was not too apparent in the promo shots, but it looks really cute in person :).
I figured that the suit would be worn on top of a separate pair of fishnets, but since I own neither a bunny suit nor any fishnet stockings, I don't know these things :).
As far as the 1/4 Marie goes...I'm still deciding. Whether or not I get that figure may depend on how satisfied I am with the Max Factory Marie ITEM #464603 when it releases (I hope!) next month. If it turns out nice, that might satisfy my need for a larger-scale Marie.
The other thing about the FREEing Marie is that it seems almost necessary to pair her up with the corresponding Honoka (I'm not sure if she would look "right" alone if that makes any sense), and the pair would be over 50,000 yen with shipping.

I also read stories quite some times about these 1/4's staining themselves with the stocking, so I would try to be as careful as possible. I am thinking of ordering my first 1/4 bunny myself and I would also put her on a glass shelf, hoping that is the best situation (there is not really much else you can try/do right? Unless you buy a loose base from some hobby store and put the figure on there.)

Yeah if the fishnets would be attached to the bunny suit, the fit of the fishnets wouldn't be as tight around the legs (every body is unique :) ), so for the most sexy look for any body type, you wear them seperately. :)

Maakie (4 mese/i fa) #36773053*Slowly catching up to reading older blogs* Nice review again! :) Mikan is always so cute! I do find it strange that Freeing never provides a base for these bunnies. Yes, it's true that they don't need it, but I would say for safety of the figure and to prevent paint transfers, it would be nice if there was one... The chest area of the bunny suit being too big for her is a nice touch! As for your question, the fishnets are a seperate piece and the bunny suit is worn on top of it. :)
So I take it you also ordered (or plan on ordering) the Marie Rose 1/4? :)

sailormatlac (4 mese/i fa) #36550609Neat review. I'm glad to see Freeing pulled off the orange suit shading as seen on the prototype. It really makes Mikan shines.
I had this figure in my wishlist for a long time and finally I missed the PO deadline thinking she would be hard to find later at a good price. After reading your review, I stumbled upon her for 14500Y on Mandarake which seems a good deal given the few cons you listed. I still think the attractive orange suit and brown hairs really make her stand out a lot. Meanwhile, I'm sad to report my 1/4 bunny collection is slowly but surely growing. With a lot of vintage character announced, I can foresee many acquisition in the future if prototypes live up to my expectation.

I was surprised by how good the orange suit looks in person. I thought the bright orange color might be way too loud, but the way she's got her back turned to the viewer, it helps to mitigate the loud color of the figure.

If you're thinking about getting her, I'd say go for it. Plus, since there are so many 1/4 To Love Ru girls, that might keep at bay any "got-one-must-get-them-all" compulsion :).

Redliger (6 mese/i fa) #33800488Unfortunately the hairs and dust embedded in the figure paint is a common occurrence for this figure. I had to return mine for a replacement and even the replacement had some amount of embedded hair and dust.
However, overall I really do like her. Even if I had to wait an extra couple months to get her.

With flaws like that, I always wonder if I just got unlucky and got a figure that squeaked through QC inspection, but I guess not...

If FREEing was in fact a little sloppy with the QC on this particular figure, it would be too bad, since the pose is cute and the figure is generally well done otherwise.

Rajke (6 mese/i fa) #33808568Thanks for your review.
Mikan sure stands out with her orange outfit. Her pose suits her well.

Usually, when I think "bunnysuit", I think of pretty standard colors like white, black, or pink, so the orange color really is a neat look!
