May Loot-Just When You Thought You've Seen it All...May Loot-Just When You Thought You've Seen it All...

victorvipervictorviper5 mese/i faLoot
May's loot contains one highly anticipated new figure, and a few select pre-owned items. Additionally, I thought I'd seen every weird thing the USPS could do, but they always manage to do new and creative bizarre things when handling and routing packages. Therefore this post also contains a tale of the USPS. Sounds interesting, right? A couple of the items in this loot have some NSFW features, and one of them could probably be considered 18+, so careful with those spoiler tags...

Putting together an Amazon Japan box from earlier in the month, an Amazon USA box, and the monthly haul from AmiAmi, we've got this pile of loot.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1527764841.jpeg

AmiAmi's May postcard features a very soft-looking Amico.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1527728109.jpeg

First, the non-figure loot consists of two items: the first volume of the English version of The Elder Sister-Like One manga and the second installment of Kenkou Cross' Monster Girl Encyclopedia. The former has been well-reviewed and I was intrigued by the fact it is sort of a mashup of magical girlfriend + HP Lovecraft.

I liked volume one of the Monster Girl encyclopedia enough that I picked up its sequel, and there are a number of illustrations in there that could make really cool figures! With the current popularity of monster girls, I'm a little surprised none of the many designs in these books has been realized in figure form.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1527850052.jpeg

The encyclopedia is an artbook with lengthy descriptions of how all the various monster girls live and love. It's not a page-turner, and some of the descriptions can be repetitive, but if you like slightly-ecchi artworks and monster girls, you might give this one a shot.

Next up, an Amazon Japan box arrived a couple weeks ago with a highly-anticipated figure from one of my favorite figure lines, Orchid Seed's Belphegor from the Seven Deadly Sins ITEM #457814.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1526384432.jpeg

Since I wrote a detailed review of Belphegor BLOG #40067 right after she arrived, I won't say too much about that figure here.

Now onto the last batch of loot, May's AmiAmi shipment, and how the USPS handled it.

USPS mini-rant: In the US, Monday May 28th was a holiday and I saw that my AmiAmi box hit the USPS International Sorting Center in New York the Saturday afternoon before, so I made a mental note to myself that I should probably expect my package on the next working day (Tuesday). First thing Tuesday morning, I checked the tracking again, expecting to see "out for delivery", only to see that it had updated to "delivery attempt-held at post office by customer request". Huh?

Closer inspection of the tracking revealed that the package had been scanned at my local post office on Monday (which is bizarre since that was a holiday!), and exactly one minute after that scan, the tracking changed to "held at post office by customer request". Even though I'd made no such request, this didn't really bother me too much since I rarely cross paths with the driver who delivers the EMS packages/Express Mail and I end up having to go to the post office anyway. However, if I wasn't paying close attention to the whereabouts of my package, god only knows if a delivery attempt ever would have been made! It's not impossible to imagine the package showing up at the post office, sitting there for the requisite number of days with no delivery attempt, and then getting shipped right back to Japan. Just when you thought you've seen it all from the USPS...

Mini-rant over. Granted, this little snafu didn't really cause me any inconvenience, but it could have if I was less diligent about tracking my incoming packages...

Getting back on track, one thing I like about MFC is that every now and then, a user will write an article about a forgotten figure. Sometimes one of those forgotten figures then catches my eye, and so the next item in this loot is such a figure, Kurushima's Hakufu Sonsaku ITEM #11438.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1527728264.jpeg

This figure caught my eye because it captures a softer side of Hakufu, who is portrayed as a good-natured but violent girl. Additionally, back in the day Ikki Tousen was rather notorious for its (at the time) over-the-top fan service, and so I like how this figure balances the fan service with a lot of charm.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1527898396.jpeg

Also, this figure is quite nostalgic, since back in the day there was just a slew of Ikki Tousen figures, but these days I wonder how many people still know the franchise? I'll also give a shout-out to MFC user sailormatlac who is responsible for spurring my interest in this figure :).

Next up is a figure that I went back and forth on whether to preorder before ultimately deciding to hunt her preowned post-release, Plum's Tomoka Minato ITEM #544780 who is rocking her basketball "spats".

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1527728501.jpeg

The box art is so cute! I kind of doubt Plum will make another complete line of Ro-Kyu-Bu figures the way that they did with their bunny figures, but if they were to make figures of all five girls as they are in this illustration, I'd have to think about getting them...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1527728509.jpeg

Cute. I like how the basketball is about the right size (I think) relative to Tomoka's body.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1527728514.jpeg

A couple months ago, AmiAmi had the Suruga-ya exclusive version of this figure that has an alternate smiling face for Tomoka. Alas, someone snagged it before me, and missing out made me realize that I wanted this figure, alternate smiling face or not. So, now she's here!

Next up is a figure that languished on my wish list for a quite a long time, Orchid Seed's Chiharu Nishikawa ITEM #29312.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1527899585.jpeg

This figure has a lot going for it. Chiharu has multiple faceplates, multiple levels of castoffability, and I am definitely susceptible to the shiny black maid/bondage costume.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1527976515.jpeg

I also like Naruko Hanaharu's ENTRY #23141 character designs, and Chiharu pairs up very well with Shoujo M ITEM #11740, another Hanaharu character. Note the similarities in the two characters' designs (maid outfit, similar color/length of hair, and their reddish brown eyes).

View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1527976520.jpeg

Naruko Hanaharu has drawn a bunch of reasonably well-known hentai manga, but he also drew the more mainstream Kamichu! ENTRY #110 manga and he designed the characters for the Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet ENTRY #46254 anime. Despite his fairly prolific output, there are only four figures directly based on his designs, and I can say that I now have half of a complete Hanaharu set :).

Finally, we have a newer-ish Sega Prize figure ITEM #581660 of Hatsune Miku in her distinctive "Pansy" module.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1527898696.jpeg

I've got a few different figures from this "Super Premium" line of prizes, and none of them have let me down. These figures are large (about 1/7 scale), all the ones I've bought have been of good quality, and Pansy Miku continues that trend; this is a lot of figure for 1500 yen. I'll probably work on a review of Miku soon, so please check it out.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/victorviper1527898707.jpeg

I really like the cutouts on the inner parts of her thighhighs; I'd never really paid any attention to that detail until seeing the figure in person!

Anyway, that wraps it up for May's loot, and as always...

THANKS FOR READING!

POLL TIME!

One of the figures from this month's loot is from the Ikki Tousen franchise ENTRY #10. Once upon a time, Ikki Tousen generated many, many, many figures and several seasons of anime. However, while the manga is still ongoing (at least sort of, anyway), there's been only 3 new episodes of Ikki Tousen anime in the last eight years, and the figure output from the series has gone from a raging river to a mere trickle.

So, the question is...

sailormatlac (4 mese/i fa) #36406400Late to the party, but glad to hear Hakufu met your expectations.

Unfortunately, among the numerous Ikki Tousen figures produced in the days - with many impressive ones among the lot - Hakufu had very little worthy one.

Their face when they discovered I wasn't running a business was priceless. I went from a "respectable businessman" status to "that guy is a manchildren" in a matter of a few seconds! ;-)

That Hakufu figure was a good find, so I'm glad your review of that figure convinced me to buy her :).

Usually, the USPS handles my stuff reasonably well (I've had fewer problems with them than with UPS, FedEx, or DHL), but sometimes they just don't seem to have their act together all that well, and I wonder how many people who *don't* carefully track their things from origin to delivery or use untrackable products run into problems...

The guy who delivers the Express Mail (which is how EMS packages are classified) knows me pretty well, as do a couple of ladies who work at the counter at the post office. Since part of the customs form is always visible with AmiAmi packages, I wonder if I'm that "manchild with the toys", too.

Late to the party, but glad to hear Hakufu met your expectations.

When I started to get serious about anime in the early 2000s, Ikkitousen was all over the place. It was a dumb show that totally assumed its inherent stupidity and fan service in a time when such a thing was still a novelty for general audiences outside Japan. Unfortunately, among the numerous Ikki Tousen figures produced in the days - with many impressive ones among the lot - Hakufu had very little worthy one. And thought I kind of liked the rest of the cast, Hakufu's naive personality and hot blonde prom queen body made her a favorite of mines.

Post stories are always weird isn't it! One must always diligently keep track of parcels! It's probably why I try to stick with my post office instead of UPS, Fedex and other such company. On the positive side, the staff knows me since 15 years and carefully handle my parcels each time. On the "negative" side, they have weird suspicions about me. Seeing a lot of stuff was shipped to me, they once suspected I was doing business in toys import/export and offered me a small business account to get better rates when shipping items (which I don't do since I only get stuff). Their face when they discovered I wasn't running a business was priceless. I went from a "respectable businessman" status to "that guy is a manchildren" in a matter of a few seconds! ;-)

Heavenly_Otaku (5 mese/i fa) #35101431Nice loot. Best I like about this loot is Sonsaku Hakufu. She is one powerful girl. The main reason I didn't get her back then, was because she is made as cold cast. A good fellow friend of mine had got her damaged during shipping, and warned me against it, considering our postal service back in the day. You are lucky to have this figure.
...
On the side note with your experience with postal services, here's what I do in similar cases, I frequently check the tracking details of the package once it has entered the country, then I start visiting the Post office daily in the early morning once the package has left Customs. Most of the times, a package gets lost on the final stage of delivery. Now I can't have that when such gold is coming in.
Good article, I enjoyed reading it.

Hakufu is definitely my favorite item in this loot. In particular, I really like her pose and body language. She's not really being coy or pandering to the observer, and I doubt she'd bat an eye at being seen in such a skimpy getup since she's pretty naive about that sort of thing; that's just Hakufu being Hakufu :).

Most of Hakufu's parts seem pretty solid; there aren't many little pieces to break off, so I'd say she presents less breakage risks than the average coldcast figure. The only real issue there is that her ahoge attaches pretty loosely, and if it were to fall on a hard surface, it would probably break. That's what happened to the ahoge on my Ryuubi ITEM #80238, but fortunately I was able to (mostly) repair that part.

The USPS is...funny. They handle millions of packages, 99.99% of them with no problem, but in my area, they subcontract the Express Mail (which EMS is classified) to non-USPS employees. I always find it funny that some flunky is delivering time-sensitive Express Mail while my normal carrier spends their day stuffing junk mail into mailboxes...

My favorite girl of the series is Kanu unchou. She has the best body, face and hair of them all. In fact, the girls from Ikki tousen series - China dress were my first figures.

The animation quality of the first ikki tousen series were crappy when compared to recent shows. What got my interest in the shows? awesome moves and fights by powerful girls of different clans and the obvious fan service. I remember Ikki tousen girls were so popular then, that manufacturer cashed in by making hundreds of ecchi figures of just the girls.

solluxcaptor (5 mese/i fa) #35082845Nice loot! I've heard of the series far before seeing any figures of it, but I've never seen or read it as it doesn't interest me personally. Hard to not know that series if you've been into anime long enough though! But no option for me on the poll :P

I had to actually look up the Ikki Tousen timeline, and it never quite dawned on me that aside from 3 OVA episodes, it's been close to a decade since any new anime has been made. If you were collecting figures in the 00's, it would have been near impossible to *not* know about the show, but I was wondering if people who started collecting in the 2010's know about the series. Based on the poll results so far, the poll results seem to be saying "not so much".

Eccmy (5 mese/i fa) #35083611Nice loot there, and nice article as usual! ^_^
As for your poll, my exact answer to it would have been "I know of the franchise, but I don't give much care about it". I knew of Ikki Tousen before even discovering its figures, but the overall standard fanservice fare failed to capture my interest.
(Generally, fanservice for the sake of fanservice doesn't interest me at best, or drives me away at worst. For example, I serioulsy got into Shokugeki no Soma aka Food Wars ENTRY #46918 since only this year thanks to me catching the anime right in the middle of the Training Camp arc, aired in late 2017 on a local TV channel, and being captivated by Megumi ENTRY #83820 and her character arc -
...
Doesn't prevent me to own a couple of figures from Ikki Tousen though, because I like the designs.

My take on Ikki Tousen is that it's a dumb fanservice show, but it's a relatively good dumb fanservice show. The Three Kingdoms parallels are sort of interesting, and one can see why all kinds of different characters from the show have their devotees. Bad fanservice shows have bland, cookie-cutter characters, and I'd say all the primary heroines in Ikki Tousen do stand out from one another.

Food Wars is one of those shows that somehow I've managed to totally miss. It seems like the kind of thing I'd like, but these days there's so much anime available for consumption, it's hard to keep up with everything...

Tomoka is quite cute :). For that matter, all the characters in Ro-Kyu-Bu are pretty cute.

indian_summer22 (5 mese/i fa) #35077926The Poll is missing an option. I knew the franchise before its figures, yet I have never read or watched it.

Yeah, I guess I had my brain turned off when trying to partition all options. I guess what I was thinking is that for quite a while, if you were keeping up on figure releases but had never seen/read the show/manga, it would be hard to *not* discover the existence of the series and its characters.

Nice loot!
I had similar situation with my package in my country ;~; we should check tracking numbers everyday

That qualifies as "reading manga" :).

I've always had decent luck with the USPS, but part of the reason might be that I always know when boxes should be arriving so when things like this happen, I'm on top of it. In part, adventures like this is why I wouldn't dare use an unregistered/untracked shipping option; in this case, my package might be sitting at a post office left to rot!

I had heard of that manga way before, but its reputation of 'foodgasms' irked me. BTW, thinking about it, this is another reason why I like Megumi so much: the reactions she gives to people with her food are of the simple, gentle, and soothing type, unlike the rest where it's of the erotic type.)
