Nakajima Atsushi Nendoroid #893Nakajima Atsushi Nendoroid #893

My only nendoroid, Nakajima Atsushi finally arrived today, and as promised, here is a detailed review, with bonus funny poses pics, and an end section asking for advice on custom nendo faces which i've mocked up!

Nakajima Atsushi is from the brilliant anime, Bungou Stray Dogs, and is tied first in my heart View spoilerHide spoilerwith Okumura Rin, if you're curious for favourite male character.
I have desperately wanted him since he was announced almost a year ago, and he did not disappoint! I pre-ordered him from AmiAmi, but managed to get my hands on the GSC Bonus Rubber strap separately. There was a big dent on the shipping box, but thankfully the packing protected him and the box. I've seen people mention this before, but the new boxes really are tiny! Shipping is only about 100 yen cheaper than it used to be, though. 580 yen for small packet to Oceania. I know because technically, atsushi is my second nendo, but i ended up selling my first ITEM #549029, because Mercy got nerfed. I generally prefer scales, but I love nendos too! This may just be a personal quirk of mine View spoilerHide spoilermy hero academia for the win but I like to listen to relevant music when unboxing figures for the first time. Here's the song I chose www.youtube.com... The Bungo Stray Dog's version of Eye of the Tiger. Anyway, let's have a look!

There's a certain crispness that only unopened boxes possess, and since i usually buy pre owned figures, i always especially appreciate new items. I give the box 10/10. Design wise, it's sturdy, and shows plenty of different ways to display Atsushi. It's also easy to open, with just one small seal, and as purple is my favourite colour, I love the plain insert. I also have a favourite number, 3, and since 9 is composed of three threes, I like his number.

Here's the instructions, in English (shown) and japanese on the other side. Fairly simple.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538546405.jpeg

He comes with his usual Detective uniform, two tiger arms in ripped sleeves, two bent arms, one bent leg, two arms holding his favourite food and chopsticks respectively, and two bonus faceplates. Surprisingly, he was originally covered in bubble wrap as well as plastic wrap, which is something I haven't actually seen before.

Here he is out of the box! Also a front, back, each side, top and bottom view.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538546479.jpeg

He looks so smug, haha!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538546466.jpeg

Pretty obvious seam line, which isn't unusual. Also a few bumps in the sculpting, but only minor ones.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538550178.jpeg

His signature unexplained black hair streak View spoilerHide spoiler I doubt he got it done in the orphanage maybe it's because he's an anime protagonist? Is faithfully included! His hair looks pointed, but it isn't painful to touch the ends, unlike this spiky boy ITEM #236127.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538550124.jpeg

Let's go through the display options, starting with official recreations! I bought this guy months ago ITEM #331505 solely to use for atsushi, so he will be accompanied by white tiger friends!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538547078.jpeg

Here he is eating Chazuke! I had to swivel the hand at the wrist joint to set it up properly, so it didn't look like the tea on rice was defying gravity by not falling out of the bowl. The chopsticks are attached together automatically, and the bowl attaches via a peg to his hand.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538546567.jpeg

The tiger hands are really a selling point for me! They detach from his sleeves, so if you want to portray him with the ripped sleeves after he transforms back, that's indeed possible. They're also individually sculpted; the right ones fingers curl up like claws, and the other has his fingers splayed out. You can rotate them where they attach so the stripes or the cute little pink paws are showing.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538546692.jpeg

"Dazai, please stop making a fool of yourself again..." The shocked face is pretty good! I would have prefered it if his shocked face had a little yellow in his eyes, but I can't remember whether this is accurate to the show or not. These are basically all the poses shown on the box, but since his normal hands are used on all the arms, you can create some other cool poses, which i'll show next. Personally, i think it's great value for money because of all the combinations.

His belt "tail" is also detachable, as I found out by accident. It only goes all the way in place in one position, but this still allows for a few different angles.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538547024.jpeg

TIGER ARMY!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538546069.jpeg

The way I currently have him displayed.

This one looks better in person. His legs also don't really bend enough for him to sit. This pic shows how far they will really go. His torso also swivels, so i imagine it's detachable, but I don't want to try in case I break him. The base appears to just be the standard nendo base, and he comes with one spare peg.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538545875.jpeg

GSC Rubber Strap bonus! I like that it isn't something essential to the figure, because I think gsc has done bonuses like that in the past, and people were mad.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538544908.gif

Here, have a gif I spent waaaayyyy too long making.

I imagine he poses really well with Dazai and Chuuya, but unfortunately I don't own them.

Three face plates for a nendo is pretty good, but I recently picked up three official blank faceplates from Madman Anime festival, and I want to make him a full on tiger face, like in season two, and a winky cat face. Here's a quick mockup I did in photoshop using some other nendos as reference.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538548239.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538547790.jpeg

The spare is in case I really screw them up, or if I think of anouther idea, or you, dear reader, have a good one! The skin colour is also different, but it's not too noticeable. I've done plenty of drawing before now, but this is my first time attempting something less this so I would really appreciate any advice. I was going to either draw them digitally and print them out as decals somehow? or just print them and see if i can trace them onto the face...View spoilerHide spoilerThis is going to be disastrous...

A few more pics View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538546191.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538546010.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538546148.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538546770.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/image/Solarstormflare1538553391.jpeg

Atsushi only released recently, so he's still available for retail price at several manufacturers. If you like Bungo stray dogs at all, consider buying him! Maybe if he sells well, someone will finally make a scale of him View spoilerHide spoiler a girl can dream right :,) If not, go try the manga or anime!

Anyway, the end of the review! Thanks so much for reading this far! As much as I love playing with Atsushi, reviews like this take time to put together, View spoilerHide spoiler I started at midday, and it's now 5.30 pm

AshuriiKareshi (6 mese/i fa) #41219573Great review. I was going to buy him but then I got rid of my other BSD nendoroids ;-; I'll probably buy him if they ever annouve akutagawa, I need them two together >>
Also with custom faceplate you could try making them here nendoroidfacema...
You would need to have them forwarded and it might be difficult to make the ones you've demonstated, but it's always a starting place. (I've ordered some but currently waiting for them to arrive ><)
Thank you! I had heard of the site before but i wasn't 100% sure how it worked. Akutagawa is getting a scale figure, so i would love if they made him a nendo, and atsushi a scale to be fair. Then we could have all 4 nendos!kanozo (6 mese/i fa) #41244309He has some cute face plates, great review. thank you! I tried really hard to be thorough.tendertofu (6 mese/i fa) #41218917oh wow, great review!! Gokutai's tigers really match well with him :0 super fun poses as well
I also bought a few blank face plates from madfest :P I would love to see your progress on recreating his expressions :D
thank you so much! Yes, they scaled together really well! Some of them were just crazy fun to make, i borrowed homura's gun to give him in two of them, although i doubt it would be much use against ability users. I think i'll make anouther post when i finish the faceplates, so the project doesn't get waylaid forever. Did you have any plans for the ones you got? I would also love to see.
