! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

As the outfit of this figure is a tight-fitting ballerina outfit, depending on your personal views, some parts of this review can be seen as NSFW !

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure of Souryuu Asuka Langley ENTRY #1553 from Evangelion Shin Gekijouban (Rebuild of Evangelion) ENTRY #148 ! This figure ITEM #48844 shows her in a ballerina-style and is made by Kotobukiya ENCYCLOPEDIA #7621 .

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

The original Evangelion is a series that I think does not need a lot of introduction on this website. In 2007 they released the first movie in the 'Rebuild of Evangelion' series, which rebooted the franchise. This specific figure though, for as far as I know, was not related to the movie series, althought it was released with it's name. The outfit and pose is based off original artwork made by Sadamoto Yoshiyuki ENTRY #8388 and appaears in the art book titled Carmine ITEM #46394 .

Asuka is one of out main characters in the franchise with a complicated personality. If I would try to explain her personality, this paragraph would get way too long! She is mixed German, American and Japanese, which explains her name also being a mixture of different languages and her looks being quite Western. With this figure we see her in a very calm and happy moment, which came off a bit as out of character at first, but I've grown to it.

The reason why and how I got her

User MOONSTARFC mentioned in a blog a while ago that she got an extra damaged copy of this figure, she also had another item I was interested in ITEM #520672 , so I asked her if we could make a bundle deal out of it. A couple of weeks later, these figures arrived at my place! I bought Asuka with the plan to gift her to an Asuka-loving friend, so I carefully made the repair (a part of her tiara had broken off) and I thought to myself, well, now that I have her opened anyway, I can make pictures of her for a review!

There is a specific artwork this figure and the matching Rei ITEM #47764 were modelled after. In my opinion the overall feel was captured well in the figure, but the figure seems a lot more light-hearted with it's bright colors. There is also one big change made which is the way her left foot is posed (which interestingly enough, has not been done so on the trading figure based on the same artwork ITEM #40245 ). The 'flipped' foot, makes the figure look a bit more casual standing, but on the other hand makes the pose less ballerina-like. Now, I'm not an expert on ballerina-poses, but I do know that some strangely positioned feet and lower legs can be common, I remember there being quite an outcry with White Odette ITEM #391932 her lower leg, but that also should be accurate to some ballerina poses. Anyway, let's get to the review!

Asuka's box comes with a lot of windows. I don't remember if I actually ever had a figure before with the backside of the box being almost completely a window. There are multiple pictures on the box of the figure, but unfortunately no mention of the original artwork. The black and pink color combination makes this box stand out quite a bit.

A sealed copy of this figure would have three round tapes at the top of the box.

The box shows an sticker proving that the item is officically licensed by the Evangelion team. As far as I know there are no bootlegs out there of this figure, but it's always good to be careful when browsing online or at conventions for her.

The figure is one solid piece and the blisters look quite simple because of that.

Unfortunately the figure seemed to have one other damage that occured in the box (might be because of the figure being stored/sealed for a really long time?), there was a big paint issue on one of her ribbons.

The first impression of this figure is that Asuka looks so graceful and kind! It's quite different from her hotheaded reactions, which are probably most remembered by people that have watched Evangelion!

Looking at all the details!

The tiara on her head was snapped in the middle, and you see a small line showing the earlier breakage on this figure.

The tiara itself has a nice sculpt and metallic-like shimmer on it.

When we move downwards to her face, I can't believe how kind she looks! It's really adorable and her cute face is really the eyecatcher of this figure!

There is a small blush on her cheeks and she has a nicely painted mouth.

Asuka's hair is put up in two big twintails, with soft looking scrunchies holding them together.

I personally really love the shape and movement of the hair and it fades from a darker orange to really light orange.

It would be nice if the split in her hair was sculpted a bit more visibly, but it's not bad this way. The scrunchies however, both have a pretty visible seamline in the middle.

The bright blue ribbon around her neck has nice detail and paint, there are also multiple shades of blue in there.

The attachment of the tiara to her hair (this was not something I did, but originally already on the figure), is a bit crude. I couldn't get the leftovers of metallic paint out of her hair. It's also better to not look at the figure from this angle, as you'll see some small attachment pieces of the tiara sticking out before disappearing in Asuka's hair.

The back (and earlier mentioned ribbon) are also good looking. I have a bit of a mixed opinion about the ruffles at the top of her outfit, it gives off the idea of ruffles well, but it looks a bit too thick for the desired effect. Also, the paint bleeds at a couple of parts.

The corset-like part of her outfit is very well done with the lines and ruffles in the middle looking good. The ribbon on top of the outfit however, looks a bit crude in sculpt. Which is surprising, because a way smaller ribbon at the back is so much better looking!

As you could already see a bit in the previous picture, the paint transfer issue on the big side-ribbon is quite an eyesore. I tried to carefully remove it, but with no succes. It seems to be an issue of this figure being stored (probably by the store) for too long in a bit of a too humid place as it seems like plasticizer leaking. For now I kept it like this and will of course inform the new owner about this issue. It might be something that has to be repainted.

Ignoring the paint-issue, the ribbon itself looks sculpted quite well.

The back of her top piece has the same metallic-like paint and I like the details sculpted in the band of the ribbon. Interesting to point out about the metallic paint is that on the original prototype it was planned for only the shoes to be metallic and the outfit being matte. Maybe that was looking a bit too bland, so Kotobukiya decided on making everything metallic?

I get that they were going for the effect of multiple layers of tulle for the bottom part, but similar to the frills at the top, it looks a bit too thick. In the original artwork you can see that you are supposed to see the bodice through the fabric, but you can't see anything of it on this figure. I do like the pink line across the end of the tulle, it may seem a bit crude from so up-close, but in general it gives a nice effect when the figure is viewed from a distance.

The back of the figure gives you a good view of her behind, which is just like the rest of this figure, quite modest. I do like that there is a small crease sculpted at the top part of the right leg.

A view from the front of her bodice is quite hard to get, even when you stick your head underneath. There is also not much to see there.

Both of Asuka's hands are posed quite gracefully with fingernails sculpted and painted. You can also see some shading inbetween her fingers and on her wrist.

Her legs are really gracefully posed, although like earlier mentioned, a bit off-model compared to the artwork. There is nice shading, especially around her knees. You can also see in this shot how her right leg is screwed onto the base, a common thing with Kotobukiya figures.

The shoes are a bit simplistic in design, but so are ballerina shoes in general. The small ribbon at the back looks good and there is a crease to be seen in the shoes, because of the movement of the foot.

The base is a print-out of a big pink gem encased in a plastic base. This could be just my personal preference, but I really don't like it. The image of the gem is not 100% crisp and the black parts of this base are a dust magnet, as you can already see in this picture with pieces of the white fabric this figure was photographed on, being stuck on the base. I also don't really understand the connection of this character and/or outfit and putting her on a gem-themed base. Some ballerina outfits contain pretty gems, but that is also not relevant to this design. I'm a bit puzzled at the choice here!

The bottom of the base mentions Gainax copyright and the figure being made in China.

Extra

I think this figure really looks the best when held in sunlight or otherwise displayed in a bright light, as it makes the face stand out even more.

The silhouette of the face of this figure is very nice. She has healthy cheeks and the nose is not too pointy or big for anime standards.

The way shadow is cast on her face and collarbones is also very nice.

In general, I think this figure definitely has her flaws, but she can be captivating at the same time too. If it were for my personal collection, I would not have kept her, but I'm sure that my friend who loves Asuka will be really happy with her! That face is absolutely adorable.

The Points

Positive
- Nice overall sculpting, with good movement in the hair.
- Nice overall painting, with especially her face looking really good.
- The figure radiates some sort of 'calm aura' with especially her face looking so kind.

Neutral
- Few small letdowns in paint and sculpt.
- Although based on official artwork, I can't help but feel she is a bit out of character
- Ballerina pose is 'adjusted' to look more casual for the actual figure.

Negative
- Attachment of tiara to hair is pretty badly done.
- My specific copy of this figure also had huge paint transfer issues on the ribbon around her waist. These issues might have come from this figure being in storage for a long time at the previous shop that had her.

The Scores

Sculpting 7/10
Sorry Kotobukiya, normally I'm a pretty big fan of your work, but considering this was a 2011 figure, it has quite a bit more flaws in sculpt than I would have expected. It feels to me like if this figure was remade now, it would have been done a lot better.

Painting 7/10
Also a bit more letdowns than I would have expected from a figure this age.

Posing 8/10
The posing is really nice, and gives off a really calm look. Her face really seals the deal. The pose is not completely accurate to an actual ballerina pose, but it will depend on your personal tastes if that's a plus or minus for you.

Base 5/10
I really dislike the base...it looks a bit...cheap. The image is not very high quality and the design overall is just a bit...egh. At least the figure seems to be very stable on it?

Packaging 8/10
Nice and pretty unique colors on the packaging, with big windows to look at the figure.

Enjoyment

I left out the rating for enjoyment as this figure is not for my own collection. I still have to gift this figure to my friend and I don't know his reaction yet.

Conclusion

The quality is a bit lower than I would expect from a Kotobukiya figure with this age, but I think that if you are an Asuka fan or in general like ballerina figures this figure can be a nice choice!

Availability

She seems to be pretty easy to find, but her price seems to go up and down a lot on the aftermarket, with her original price being ¥6,8K. I've seen her go from anywhere from ¥5-10K second hand. It will really depend on how big of an Asuka and/or ballerina fan you are if you think she is worth that.

And to finish it!

victorviper (4 mese/i fa) #56510934This is one of those interesting figures that you wouldn't see today.
One thing that was always neat about Eva were all the ridiculously non-canon Rei and Asuka figures that got made: ballerinas, gothic lolitas, mermaids, you name it. Of course, many companies make non-canon figures of popular characters, but it seems like they always go back to the same basic ideas: bunnies, race queens, beach figures, and so forth.
This figure has always been on my "maybe should by" list, and it seems like it is not too easy to find at a good price these days.

Hehe, but we also have bunnies, race queens, beach figures etc. from Evangelion as well! ;D But like you said their 'figure universe' is so big, that we got many more fantastic other things. Even though I don't collect EVA anymore, I do collect from Watanabe-san so ITEM #5703 and ITEM #5704 still sometimes come into my mind to maybe purchase. ;)

It does seem like you said, that more recently we got more 'normal' EVA figures with mainly their plugsuits or casual clothes. I'm curious to what they will do if we ever get aything 'weird' again, maybe something futuristic like:

https://www.parkablogs.com/sites/default/files/der-mond-11.jpg

I would watch out with this figure as the commenter below also mentioned already getting one damaged in the mail twice. She would be fun to pick up on sale, but she seems to mainly go for her release price or more.

moonstarfc (4 mese/i fa) #56504470Okay actually, you're right. I meant I didn't open the plastic blister. The tiara was loose in the box outside the blister so I took that out and put it in a bag. (I didn't even pay attention to the figure itself lol, I guess I figured because I was giving it away for free...)
And the second copy I got, the leg had also arrived snapped off so...I'm just going to assume this figure doesn't age well.

Ah, I got it now. ;) I appreciated the tiara being in a small bag! :) Unless you look from really close the damage is not that noticeable now. BUT YIKES A BROKEN LEG?? Hopefully at least a clean break so it can be easily fixed? Now I feel a bit guilty for taking this 'better' Asuka from you. TT^TT I guess you're also not going to try a 3rd time?

Maakie (4 mese/i fa) #56504119Oh! Don't worry about it! Sorry if it seemed like it did! The damage really looked like something that happened during storage and not something you could do anything about. But if you didn't open her...I guess that adds some extra mystery to this figure: The damaged tiara was put nicely in a small bag and I assumed you did that? I guess it was the previous owner or the shop. :O
And yikes! It might be something to do with that metallic paint easily coming loose? Anyway, I hope your second copy didn't have any other issues!
I'm also working on a review from the Hikari I purchased from you by the way. :) She is lovely! Thanks again!

I actually re-purchased this figure, this time from Suruga-ya, and it came with similar paint issues! Maybe these just don't age well.

Hey, you should be glad about that! :D I just hope that it's because of storage and not something that happened in the factory.
