Today, we'll be reviewing a figure that checks a bunch of my moe boxes, Union Creative's "Darkness" Tearju Lunatique. Because of Tearju's busty physique and the skimpy Darkness costume, some of the shots below could be considered NSFW.

About the character: Tearju Lunatique ENTRY #44190 is a character from the To Love Ru media franchise. She is established to be a genius in the field of bio- and nano-technology, and she can be thought of as the mother of Yami/Golden Darkness ENTRY #1875, since she used some of her own cells to create Yami.

Tearju also appears in the Black Cat ENTRY #456 media franchise (abother Kentaro Yabuki work), and Black Cat Tearju is nearly identical in almost every way. In the Black Cat Universe, Tearju created Eve ENTRY #2540 whose design clearly inspired the Yami/Golden Darkness character in To Love Ru.

Key data:

Age: Unknown, although Black Cat Tearju is established to be 27.
Birthday/Astrological Sign: February 24 (Pisces)
Height: 167 cm (5'6")
Weight: 58 kg (128 pounds)
Three Sizes (bust/waist/hips): 96/56/90 cm (38/22/35 inches).

Packaging----------8/10

The front panel of the box has a large window and a bust-up shot of Tearju.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/10/2211848.jpeg

One side panel features a full body shot of the figure.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/10/2211849.jpeg

The other side panel features a slightly different shot of Tearju and some of her best assets :).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/10/2211850.jpeg

The back panel has an odd marquee-shaped window allowing a good view of Tearju's...hair.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/10/2211851.jpeg

Tearju requires zero set up. Open up the blister, and she's good to go.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/10/2211847.jpeg

This is a large figure, and because of Tearju's kneeling pose the box is not large in volume but it is heavy. The box measures 25 by 21 by 20 cm and figure plus box weighs just under 800 grams.

Base----------NA

Because of the kneeling pose, Tearju does not need a base, nor does she come with one.

Posing----------9/10

Tearju is depicted as having a shy and timid disposition, and she can be rather clumsy at times, and IMO her pose captures these elements of her personality.

Let's have a look at her.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216435.jpeg

Tearju's body language, in particular the way she's holding her arms, conveys her somewhat meek nature, and she looks good from a number of angles, so I'd say that Union Creative did just fine with her pose.

Sculpting----------8/10
Painting----------7.5/10

Union Creative can be all over the place in terms of the quality of their products, but I would say they did a nice job with this figure. Tearju's sculpt has a number of interesting features, although we will see the black cloaks in this line of figures have been prone to little problems. There are a couple of obvious flaws in the paintwork as well.

I really like the design of Tearju's face. She is very pretty, and her little blush reinforces her shy and awkward nature. Additionally, green eyes are a favorite feature of mine, and her eyes are quite striking. The glasses are also nicely sculpted and that will be a plus for meganekko fans.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216434.jpeg

On the other hand, there are some visible flaws in the photo above. The painting on her mouth looks a little bit odd. Also, while the sculpt and paint on her collar is good, you can see that the spaghetti straps on the outfit don't quite meet up with the collar. The straps are sculpted/raised and not just painted on her skin, so that is a nice feature.

Blonde hair is always a painting challenge, as it can sometimes look very flat and uniform in color, so I like how Union Creative did some shading in her hair. Her "intake" hairstyle is sort of a classic anime style, and one that is shared by both Tearju and her "daughter" Yami. I also like how her horns have that bold color gradient, transitioning from almost black at the bases to a shade of purple at the tips.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216433.jpeg

One of the key features of the Darkness outfit are the red talons. Union Creative gives them an almost metallic red finish which really makes the talons stand out.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216432.jpeg

Tearju has very long hair, and I like the blue bow. It mixes up the color palette of the figure a little bit and the bow also gives her a certain girlish charm.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216431.jpeg

One odd thing that stands out is they way that "wedge" of hair attaches to her head.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216430.jpeg

The sculpting on the bow is good. Knots can be a problem area, but the sculpting and painting there is fine.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216429.jpeg

As we noted a minute ago, the spaghetti straps are sculpted and not just painted on, but you can see how in spots it looks like the straps are growing out of her flesh. In fairness, I've noted that this type of issue is fairly common. I also like how the very thin straps frame her very large chest.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216427.jpeg

Note the little bubbles there. I noticed the same thing on Union Creative's Mikan Yuuki ITEM #676193, so I'm going to guess that this is an issue with all the figures in this line.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216426.jpeg

Tearju is the bustiest member of the To Love Ru cast, with a bust size of 96 centimeters (38 inches), and this element of her design is impossible to ignore. The star-shaped emblem is a key feature of the Darkness costume.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216425.jpeg

The texture on the arm pieces of the outfit is nicely done.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216423.jpeg

You can see some messy painting on her arm.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216422.jpeg

The cloak helps to keep the figure stable, and I like the many folds and creases in the cloak!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216421.jpeg

What I don't like so much is this copyright information stamped on the underside of the cloak. It drives me crazy when figure companies do this...

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216420.jpeg

One area where Union Creative absolutely nailed it was the sculpting of Tearju's thighs!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216419.jpeg

I also like the sculpting of her toes and nails. In particular, I like how her toes are not all the same size.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216418.jpeg

The thong is another key feature of the Darkness outfit.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216417.jpeg

The gap between Tearju's thighs is sort of a classic sexy feature.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216416.jpeg

Tearju-sensei is not exactly a waif, and so I like how Union Creative sculpted her stomach.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/18/2216415.jpeg

Scale Comparison

With the kneeling pose, Tearju spans about 7 inches (17.75 cm) at her tallest point (the tips of the horns), and if she were standing, it looks like she would be about 11 inches (28 cm). This makes her 1/6 scale just about spot on.

I like how these two look together, as their hair colors and body types contrast. I also like how Union Creative has not just recycled the same basic pose over and over with this line of figures! Mikan ITEM #676193 is, not surprisingly, also 1/6 scale.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/10/2211846.jpeg

"Mother and daughter" might be a good description of the shot below. Aquamarine's Yami ITEM #300672 is 1/8 scale for comparison.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215393.jpeg

I cannot lie; I have a soft spot for busty blonde characters and so I really like both of these figures. Rocket Boy's "Slingshot Swimsuit Girl" ITEM #464771 is also 1/6 scale.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215392.jpeg

These two also have some physical similarities. Vertex's Pochaco ITEM #235623 is listed as 1/6 scale, but I'd say she is more like 1/5.5, and you can see how Tearju compares.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215390.jpeg

I like the blonde hair/black outfit combination on both of these figures. Max Factory's Kobato Hasegawa ITEM #98882 is a large 1/7 scale.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215389.jpeg

Diabolic girls are another of my favorite themes, and I like how these two pair up. Tearju is meek and clumsy, while Leviathan ITEM #195472 has a very tsundere personality. Orchid Seed's Leviathan is 1/7 scale, and you can see how Tearju will compare to standing figures.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/05/17/2215388.jpeg

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

Arguments for: Good body sculpt, fairly good overall quality, at least for me the Darkness costume and Tearju's blonde hair, large breasts, green eyes, and glasses is a powerful combination of moe points, the 1/6 scale is a good choice, and if you are a fan of Tearju-sensei, there aren't that many figures from which to choose.

Arguments against: A few painting errors, some air/paint bubbles on the cloak seems to be a recurring issue with this line of figures, and that copyright information stamped into the underside of her cloak is kind of annoying.

Overall, I'd say that Union Creative did a nice job with this figure, and if you are a fan of the character, I would recommend this figure.

Availability (as of this writing)

Sold out new.

This figure was released back in April 2019, so unless you can find a new one out in the wild somewhere, you'll be going the preowned route. Tearju sold new for 15000 yen, and you probably will pay close to that for a preowned Tearju. I recall seeing preowned prices of 13000-15000 yen for this figure, and a search of Mandarake reveals that they last listed this figure for 15000 yen.

While I don't like To Love Ru as a series, I can deny how good the girls from that series translate to figures and this Tearju is absolutely gorgeous and this review truly shows it.

You make an interesting point. There are definitely 2D designs that don't translate particularly well into 3D, but the To Love Ru girls certainly do look good when so rendered!

Helsing3 mese/i fa#77046567Nice one , wanted to get her but in the end decided not to. Maybe later down the road.

She is definitely a great figure if you happen to change your mind!

Criscokid3 mese/i fa#77047523Great review! Thanks for taking the time to do so. This is the one UC To LOVEru "Darkness" figure missing from my collection. At the time of pre-order, I had too many other purchase commitments and missed out. I hope to add her to my collection one day.

I'm in the other position - trying to keep up with the releases. Because of some higher priority items, I passed on Ryouko ITEM #806304, but I'd like to pick that one up eventually. Momo ITEM #872735 is also looking good, but with the COVID-19 situation, who knows when that one will see the light of day.

Very nice pictures. I agree with what you are saying about the kneeling poses not needing bases and maybe in this case there isn't any design that would have made sense. I know nothing about To LOVEru so I can't say. But for example, even though I think this kneeling UC figure is great (ITEM #740094 ), I do wonder sometimes if it would be better if it had a fabric base to act like she's in bed or something similar. I might create a "base" myself for it.

dtindcarea3 mese/i fa#77043202Nice review and I like how you compared her next to a whole bunch of other figures. Maybe I'm wrong but Union Creative seems to make a lot kneeling poses (and related) so that they don't have to make bases. I have this figure by Yamato that has no traditional base but does have a thin vinyl disc that you can use as a base ITEM #84647. I use the vinyl disc in displaying her so I do wonder if there is something like a fabric or vinyl base that UC could have added to bring more "pizzazz" to this figure. I guess you could be creative yourself and buy or make a base for the figure. Just something to think about.

It actually doesn't bother me that UC didn't include a base. I own several figures with kneeling poses, and I don't think I use the included base with any of them. IMO, as long as the figure is designed properly and has no stability issues, the base for a kneeling figure is usually unnecessary unless of course it's an essential part of the design, like in that figure you linked.

Thanks for reading!
