Scáthach -- Heyagi Mode - 1/7 - Alter -- REVIEW 21Scáthach -- Heyagi Mode - 1/7 - Alter -- REVIEW 21

Good Lord, It’s December!
Wasn’t yesterday Thanksgiving? And just last week, Halloween?!?
In the words of the Steve Miller Band, “Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping .. into the future!”
I guess it’s officially time to start the countdown.

Back Story
From the moment I laid eyes on this figure in the MFC database, I knew that I wanted to make her a part of my collection. She seemed to embody every aspect of the “divine feminine” that I had sought to capture during my career in photography, and she did so without any overt sexuality or hyper-exaggerated flirtation. The essence of this figure is relaxed confidence, with a dash of innate happiness, and the sense of quiet satisfaction. Compared to other figures of the character, she is the polar opposite of how most people may view her, but as I am completely ignorant to the story line and characters of Fate/Grand Order, I have no ulterior motives or preconceived notions.

I know only that this figure embodies perfectly the girl that I dreamt of as a college student (30 years ago), and besides the hair color, the girl I ultimately married and still adore today.

When I saw her posted as an ad on MFC, I quickly contacted the seller to learn more about authenticity and shipping costs, but there wasn’t any response for a few days. Just when I was losing hope that the figure was still available at all, the seller contacted me and we concluded the transaction quickly and smoothly. I feel today that the price I paid for her was a steal, and still consider myself very lucky to have her on the top shelf. My eye always goes to her first, and usually last as well.

In my book, she is the epitome of what a great figure should be.

Scathach – Heyagi Mode – 1/7 - Alter -- ITEM #464672
Sculptor: Numakura Toshiaki -- ENTRY #8137
Vendor: private MFC seller ($160.00 in October of 2019)

The Box
The box is another completely clear plastic case with two internal flaps that rise up on each side with imagery of the figure. The magenta text on the exterior of the box is clean, perfectly toned to match the darker colors of Scathach’s hair, and is presented in a very classy, professional manner. From the first holding, this doesn’t have the feel of being a cheap or low-end product. The tasteful and elegant presentation is quite captivating from the outset of your experience.

The blister packaging is quite well matched to Scathach’s figure, and there was no movement of the figure within before the unboxing process began.

The Figure
Much like the figure of Yoko Littner that I reviewed last month (BLOG #44133), this figure has a simulated carpeted (or rugged) base with an ivory white faux fur texture. Unlike the Yoko figure’s base, this one appears to have a higher-end fur, and it seems to be holding together much better at the outside fringe of the circular base. As seen in the photos, there are a couple of spots where tufts of fur don’t necessarily want to lay down uniformly, but overall, I’m quite pleased with the quality of the base over the previous example.

Two plastic pegs rise above the fur to attach Scathach’s left foot to the base, and though she really only carries her weight on her left foot, she is relatively stable on the uneven surface. More on this later.

Scathach comes as a single piece and includes two perfectly matched holes in her left foot for the pegs previously mentioned in the base.

Reviewer's Notes
Overall Sculpt
When assembling Scathach onto her base, I found it easiest to place my left-hand fingers under the base, and using my right-hand thumb and fingers, forced the figure’s left foot gently, but solidly down onto the pegs. I wasn’t worried so much about breaking anything at the time – I just wanted to make sure that the pegs were seated as firmly as possible because there is a definite lean to the figure (away from the front of the base). Within a week on the shelf, I noticed that she was beginning to lean heavily to one side, and before she could fall, I pulled her from the shelf and slowly adjusted the positioning of the foot on the pegs until she stood more vertically on the base. Since then, she has had no problems remaining upright.

While I love the fact that her crossed ankles give an added flavor of her relaxed nature, I DO wish that there was a way to ensure a more stable stance. Her feet are beautifully sculpted, though, and I wouldn’t want to change anything.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/scathach_sweater/scathach_sweater_display_08_72.jpg

With legs that seem to go on for days, the sculptor has really given us a prime example of how beautifully feminine legs can be developed. From the delicate muscle tone of her thighs, to the slight detail at the front and back of her knees, and all the way down to her beautiful ankles and achilles tendons, Scathach does an impressive job of showing a lot of skin without giving any embarrassing or flirty hints of more. Though not exactly prim and proper, her presented lower half is scantily clad in a tasteful and comfy manner.

The only wardrobe item on the figure, Scathach’s sweater, is a masterpiece! It showcases the gorgeous body beneath it (in the folds and contoured body lines) while at the same time appearing to be cozy and not overly snug. It’s not precisely the “oversized sweater” that is so attractive at times, but it’s damn near there.

The sculpting of the details is just superb – the fringe at the bottom is detailed and reminiscent of every sweater I’ve ever worn – the folded turtle-neck collar is gorgeous without being too close to her neck – even the pattern of the knit on the sweater surface is great and gives a very realistic sense of the feel and texture of the top. Even the seam at both shoulders (I’m assuming for the manufacturer’s assembly of the figure) line up with the knit pattern of the upper portion of the sweater, and they look natural and decently hidden.

The only complaint that I might have about the sweater (if I ever stooped so low as to complain about something so trivial), is that the sweater doesn’t hang realistically on her breasts. Unless Scathach lifted her breasts and tucked the sweater under them as she donned the garment, the fabric would never fit this way .. not to mention that the implication in the figure is a state of comfort in which a bra is most likely not being worn. This makes it even less likely that you’d get the definition presented here without some kind of support structure within the sweater. But again, this isn’t really a big issue to me … just something that I noticed, thought about for 13 seconds, and felt it only right to relay to you.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/scathach_sweater/scathach_sweater_display_12_72.jpg

Scathach’s crossed arms and semi-folded hands are pretty well hidden behind her hair and her bum, but they are also a beautiful sculpt with feminine fingers and a pose that is quite nonchalant.

The sculpt of her head, face, and hair is simply stunning. There isn’t a threat in sight, and you’d never know that you were looking at a powerful female warrior – instead, you’d notice the fluid grin that crosses her lips, the lovely bangs that come down just to the top of her eyes, and a full head of the most amazing hair peeling out in a shower around the back of her body.

The seam at the top of her head is VERY well hidden!

Painting
The colors used on this figure are every bit as inviting as are the form and shape. As Scathach has a really quite pale complexion, her skin tone is a beautiful alabaster, and the sweater is just a couple of shades lighter in the realm of antique white. Her hair, on the other hand is a luxurious and almost decadent plum color that allows reddish highlights when the light hits it just right.

While the painting on this figure was very simple, I did find a single (very tiny) spot between her collar bones – nothing that I’ll complain about as everything else is so pristine.

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/scathach_sweater/scathach_sweater_display_16_72.jpg

Her face is just lovely, with a hint of pinkish-peach at the lips, and her trademark red eyes peering out from beneath her deep purple bangs. Here, too, the presentation of color surrounding her beautiful face is just gorgeous.

Overall Presentation
Though Hugh Hefner coined the phrase, “the girl next door” back in the early 50s, I tend to think of a song made popular by Frank Sinatra with the same name when I look at this figure. If you haven’t heard it before, I encourage you to look it up in your favorite music service – it’s just the kind of ballad that a lonesome boy might sing over his dreams of the perfect girl, and for me, this figure fits quite neatly into that mold.

On the shelf, you’d think that her simplicity might make her look a little awkward next to other figures with implied movement or action, but it’s quite the opposite. The confidence she exudes is every bit as powerful as the high kicks and power-slashes of her figure cohorts, and she just keeps smiling all day long. From a distance, or up close, her girlish figure demands your attention, and no matter how much you may try, it really is quite difficult to pull your eyes away.

Comparisons
I’ve used this figure in previous comparisons a couple of times, and will include those shots after a couple of newer comparisons …

The first comparison is with Alisa from God Eater – God Eater 2 - Alisa Ilinichina Amiella - 1/8 - White Swimsuit ver. (Alphamax) -- ITEM #689613

Both of these figures seem to be “wound down” in their poses, and almost approachable (if you really screwed up your nerve!). Though Scathach is a 1/7 scale, and Alisa is 1/8 scale, they seem to be quite close in actual size (removing the bases from both still shows them being pretty relative). I’d be curious to see what the two of them looked like if they swapped outfits. :)

http://www.happyakrz.com/anime/scathach_sweater/scathach_sweater_comp_1_72.jpg

The second comparison is with Judith – Kidou Sentai Iron Saga Judith 1/8 Complete Figure – not listed in MFC

I really like how these two compliment each other in terms of color. Again, the scale seems odd because Judith is 1/8 scale, and I can imagine that if she were barefoot next to Scathach, she still wouldn’t be so much smaller as to skip a full scale step. Maybe Scathach is small for a 1/7 scale? I like, too, the comparison between a very simple and a very complex figure – but both red-eyed beauties are captivatingly alluring.

Lessons Learned
Sometimes the figure that you think couldn’t possibly be as great in person as it is in the photos online, actually is!

As always, please feel free to reach out with questions or comments! I love hearing from you all!

Until next time!

victorviper (10 giorno/i fa) #71239004I've somehow managed to avoid falling down the Fate rabbit hole, but damn if this isn't one good looking figure. The sweater dress hits that perfect sweet spot of sexy yet not outright lewd.
I hadn't really thought about it until you mentioned it, but the fit of the sweater/dress around the bust area is a little bit unrealistic, but then again let's be realistic - the appeal of a figure depicting a character in a baggy outfit is going to be limited, so it's all about giving the fans what they want.
Nice review!

Yes, even in the world of Japanese anime/manga figures, the end result must be a satisfactory return on investment, and for the manufacturers who want to sell as many copies of their figures as possible, they need to listen carefully to what their collectors have to say. I, personally, wouldn't mind seeing what the clumpy, oversized sweater would look like on her, but there's no question that a certain amount of her sex-appeal would be lost for most buyers. :)

I have nothing more to say but a collective "aw" I spoke out loud when I read this sentence. I absolutely love the narrative you weave around the figures you review. My favorite part probably has to be her hands tucked behind her hair, and I like her hair painting as well (appears to my tired eyes as almost having a gradient, is this true?).

At the core of me, I'm an old-fashioned guy who wants nothing more than to be the Prince to my Beauty .. unfortunately, I've spent most of my life believing I was the Beast, which did nothing for my self-confidence or motivations. But Beauty has stuck with me for 26 years, we have two AMAZING kids, and I count myself amongst the luckiest of men.

In regards to the hair color on Scáthach, I'm not sure that a gradient is what the manufacturers intended, but they definitely got a little bit of it as an end result. My guess is, there is an undercoat (perhaps a primer) that is a reddish color (or maybe just more violet), and in some places like the crown of her head, the deep plum is a bit thinner and allows that brighter color to come through. Whatever the original intent was, the result is very pleasing to the eye.
