REVIEW: JoJo Master Stars Prize Figures (Banpresto)REVIEW: JoJo Master Stars Prize Figures (Banpresto)Review

dandybabydandybaby9 mese/i fa
Hey everyone!

Today I’ll be reviewing the Banpresto Master Stars line of JJBA figures.

Jotaro ITEM #63453 / Josuke ITEM #99558 / Giorno ITEM #117000 / Rohan ITEM #54282

This is my first review (and first article for that matter) so this is kind of a big deal for me. I've been working on this in my spare time for several weeks - mainly because I don't actually get any. (⇀‸↼‶)

I wanted to review these in order to show just how good prize figures can be. I recall reading an article several weeks ago, regarding preferences when it comes to figures. There were some negative responses about prize figures; and one went so far as to specifically name Banpresto. Ouch.

Note: You can right click and open the images in a new tab to view at full resolution.

BACKSTORY:
With the exception of ITEM #189870, I told myself I wasn’t going to collect prize grade JoJo figures. I was keen to see the MSP line in person however, so I decided to get them for my fellow JoBro brother. When I gave him the Josuke figure for his birthday, I was forced to renege on what I'd said previously. IT. WAS. FLAWLESS.

What do you think I did that very same day? What can I say, I have zero self-control when it comes to JoJo. I found them all quite easily, except for Jotaro. If you've ever tried to hunt him down, you'll know he isn't easy to find for a decent price. He sells pretty much instantly on Mandarake. I got lucky and found three of them listed on Jungle - for cheaper than the last listed price on Mandarake. Score!

Now, on to the main event...

PACKAGING:
The boxes are very colourful and visually appealing.

https://i.ibb.co/LnVB8N4/front-back-box.jpg

The front, back and one side feature images of the figure itself. Josuke has his back to us to highlight his friggin amazing jacket. The other side of the box features Araki's artwork. The Giorno art is obscured by a text box (which features on the rear of the other boxes). Josuke's box is the only one to feature advertising for products from other parts.

https://i.ibb.co/nDBqH0j/left-right-side-box.jpg

Who knew the 'Master' in Master Stars was an acronym? It stands for 'Maximum Absolute Supremacy Throne Enthusiasm Raptly'. Not that it makes much sense in English; but you get the gist. For interest's sake, you can find an approximate Google translation of that text here. The damage to Jotaro’s box is unfortunate. Believe it or not, Jungle emailed me immediately after I purchased; to inform me of the damage and ask if I wanted to cancel my order because if it. Of course I didn't... but 10/10 for customer service!

The internal packaging is nothing to write home about. Like most prize figures there is no blister - just a cardboard liner with the pieces of the figure itself wrapped in plastic. Putting the figures together is simple, but you need to use a bit of force to get some of the pieces in place. Getting Jotaro’s hands (which are attached to his trouser pockets) into his arms was the most challenging part as they are quite rigid.

Upon successful completion, I swear this played in my head.

SCULPT, PAINT & POSING:
https://i.ibb.co/NWwgPb3/details.jpg

First, I'll start by saying the attention to detail in the sculpt and paint is next level: the folds and creases in their clothing, the zipper and ladybug brooches on Giorno’s outfit, Josuke’s necklace and blingy cuffs, the stitching and wrinkles in their leather shoes… and the teeny ladybug on Giorno’s shoe zipper!

All the poses are based on Araki’s illustrations, which we just saw on the packaging. And as we're all aware, there's never a dull pose in JoJo. Honestly, just looking at Josuke makes me think "shining justice mebae te..." View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://i.ibb.co/vXPYcTG/shining-justice.png

JOTARO
https://i.ibb.co/9Wchw47/jotaro.jpg

Jotaro looks better in the flesh than he does on the box; that low angle doesn’t do him any favours. He actually looks like a fresh-faced 17 year old and not a 30 year old chain smoker like he does in the anime (and then he goes on to reverse-age in DIU). I almost prefer Jotaro's hands-in-pockets pose to his signature 'point' pose. It's commanding, yet casual at the same time. The triangles on his belts have been carefully painted. His skin-tight shirt and some excellent shading highlight his ripped chest and abs. Hot damn, I'm gonna have to be careful this review doesn't get all Fifty Shades, lmao. His billowing coat presents a bit of a problem though, more on that later.

JOSUKE
https://i.ibb.co/3hw7spn/josuke.jpg

There's a good amount of weight in these guys. Josuke comes in at a C H O N K Y 375g. If somebody breaks in to your house, hurl Josuke at them. They'll probably receive more damage than he will. His hair sculpt has been flawlessly recreated in fine detail, as have his perfect eyebrows; because IMO, Josuke has the best eyebrows of any JoJo character, period. The back of his jacket is dope - I almost want to put a mirror behind him because it seems a shame to have his back to the wall where it won't be seen.

GIORNO
https://i.ibb.co/n1CkzxJ/giorno.jpg
Giorno pls show some more chest (sorry, I have a weird infatuation with this beautiful blonde angel)
Giorno's outfit has a pearlescent finish, which makes it really pop compared to the others. I'm mildly annoyed his eyes are red though, given that his eyes have never been depicted as blazing red at any point. I love his hair sculpt, I swear if I was a child I'd be very tempted to chew on it. It legit reminds me of Sev or something. It's an Indian noodle snack BTW, Google it. As I touched on earlier, the ladybug brooches are impressively detailed; they’re the part of his outfit I find myself immediately drawn to. Even the paintwork on the smallest ones has been done precisely.

ROHAN
https://i.ibb.co/1L22Z3D/rohan.jpg

The shading on Rohan is a little dark - and this is even more apparent under artificial lighting. It's making his white outfit come off as grey. I feel his earrings are a bit on the clunky side too. I adore his hands though; he's the only one without closed fists. They've been realistically sculpted; from the tendons on the back of his hand to the lines on his palms. Apart from some seam lines, I honestly can't find any real flaws with them - he has better hands than some of my expensive scale figures.

https://i.ibb.co/stmNy25/hands.jpg

Like most prize figures, there are a few paint defects on these guys; namely small black specks, some slightly sloppy lines/edges and the odd minor scuff. However, they're so insignificant that you wouldn’t notice them unless inspecting the figures up close. There are also some minor visible seam lines - my problem child Rohan got the worst of these, especially around his jawline. Furthermore, his skin is unnaturally glossy. He was the first release from this line, so I'm glad that the future ones didn’t get this same treatment.

https://i.ibb.co/27JpHCz/shiny.jpg

The shiny little bitch looks he needs some blotting paper.
Either that, or his highlight is what the kids these days call 'on fleek'.

https://i.ibb.co/JtR5R1K/lineup-1-edit.jpg
Look at these boys... dem luscious Joestar lips tho
BASE:
They have no bases to speak of - just supports for the feet. They do an acceptable job, however. I haven’t had any issues with the figures falling (unless they’re knocked), but due to his enormous coat, Jotaro is considerably top heavy and has a tendency to lean backwards - so I had to use blu tack under his feet for extra stability. Rohan comes with no supports at all. Like Josuke and Giorno, he’s fairly stable on his own; but I blu tacked his feet down also.

https://i.ibb.co/2Ys2c80/jotaro-feet.jpg

I'd love to have words with whoever designed and approved these monstrosities for Jotaro's feet. Thankfully I have him on a high shelf where I can't see them, but... yikes. They might have looked marginally better if they were black like Josuke's support, not transparent. In addition, they're less rigid than the other supports, so they don’t sit completely flat. You may be able to see in the photo that they curl up slightly at the front.

ENJOYMENT:
10/10 obviously, but I'm biased since it's JoJo. If this review encourages someone who wouldn't have previously considered these to actually buy them, I'd be impressed. This line looks great with the Joseph figure I mentioned in the beginning. I only wish Banpresto had made an equivalent Jonathan figure.

https://i.ibb.co/qpqTb1S/jojoshelf1.jpg
My JoJo 'overflow' shelf, where all my non-SAS figures live (apart from Jot4ro there)

WRAP-UP:
Special thanks to my derpy cat, who was a massive hindrance while I was trying to take photos. She nearly gave Rohan a boop off a 3 metre high railing. TBH, it's probably what he deserves.

https://i.ibb.co/42K3nWb/kiki.jpg

That's all I have for now, thanks for reading this far! Hopefully I'll find the time to do more reviews in future. I'll end with a group shot of these beautifully photogenic boys - for your viewing pleasure.

Have a wonderful day (or evening), wherever you may be in the world!

Sundae9 mese/i fa#72221071Sorry for the super late comment! Had a busy week, and I'm just catching up on replies _(:3」∠)_
Great review, I loved reading your comments on them all! Too bad Rohan's skin came out shinier than the rest, I love him but it's probably what he deserves
The detail on these is amazing right down to the sculpting on the stitches, even though JJBA sadly doesn't have many quality scales it's nice to see that there's at least a prize line that generally came out wonderfully. Here's hoping for more JoJo figures in the future!
Also loved seeing your kitty in that last pic, she's adorable!

Hellooo... I was wondering where you'd gotten to!

Thank you! (^▽^) Rohan doesn't seem overly shiny when you're just looking at him, but photographing him seems to highlight it, unfortunately.

Came out wonderfully is right. I never thought I'd say I treasured a prize figure over some of the more expensive scales in my collection, but those 5 (Joseph included) are just stunning. They're far superior to any other PF I own.

I'd love some JoJo scales but won't hold my breath. Am hoping for more Nendoroid announcements in 2020 though. I need my Joseph Nendo! I see a lot of requests for him, so fingers crossed.

I had to include her, haha.
She follows me everywhere like I'm the dang pied piper. (=^・ω・^=)

dandybaby9 mese/i fa#71926523You have your spindly and sharp DIO brows, I'll have my full, high-arched, expertly groomed Josuke brows.

I picked up JoJo A-Go Go last night and started flicking through. Wouldn't you know it, I flicked straight to that illustration. Legit never noticed it. Some JoJo fan I am, I'll show myself out.

(But not before I argue that his eyes are light pink in the illustration and bright red on the figure. Not quite the same, haha)

Oh ho, so we're gonna fight about eyebrows now?! You have your spindly and sharp DIO brows, I'll have my full, high-arched, expertly groomed Josuke brows. If you have any issues with this, please PM me and I'll get back to you in 7-10 working days... lmao

Yah, the other pathetic mortals here are pretty swell tbh. Glad I didn't turn vampire in the end. Those long sharp fingernails would have been highly impractical.

heroizumi9 mese/i fa#71906887Thank you for the review! I'm constantly fighting myself to not get into Master Stars Piece figures from JoJo cuz I know I won't stop. I have two Haikyuu figures from the line as well as a whopping 8 from Lupin III....four of which are color variants of Lupin. (this Lupin obsession is why I'm scared to start into JoJo with these aahhhhhh).
Josuke looks chonky as hell, however if you want the most true and chonk Josuke, look no further than ITEM #641089. He is absolutely massive. I will admit he doesn't look as good as the Master Stars Piece figure though.

You're welcome. (^_^) I didn't know there were Haikyuu figures in the MSP line, now I'm gonna have to check them out! I only started watching Haikyuu a little over a week ago (I'm late to the party as usual) but it is amazing. Definitely gonna need some figures.

Haha... at least there's only 4 in this line, so collecting them all shouldn't be too daunting! There are limited edition colour variations of Jotaro and Rohan too, but they're extremely rare and go for stupid money. The black version of Rohan has been sitting on Mandarake for months now. I'm guessing nobody wants to pay 30k for him, lmao

I'll have to hunt down the Grandista Josuke. I'll probably end up getting it for my bro at some point; Josuke is his best boi, so naturally he must collect all of them.

That illustration of Giorno is one of my favourites so it was the first one to pop up in my mind when you said he never had pink eyes lmao. I love Jojo's utter inconsistency regarding colour palettes <3

And excuse u have you SEEN my waifu's eyebrows?? you could cut air with those!!
the anime really didn't do DIO justice by making his eyebrows blond tbh.. Eyes of Heaven did a much better job;

sobs, he's beautiful.....

That's a bummer regarding the mask. I can't believe they aren't selling authentic products smh.
At least you have some good company among us other pathetic mortals u_u

It's a shame that this line didn't stay active. They are straight up some of the prettiest Jojo figures out there, I wonder why they stopped after only four :<
(Also yeah what the hell is up with like no Okuyasu merch??)

About this blog

Dandy likes to write, but isn’t necessarily any good at it. Hopefully my blogs aren't total space junk, baby.

https://i.ibb.co/WGTjdRG/dandy-laugh.gif

BY THE WAY: I'm a total jokester IRL and that tends to come through in my writing. If you're the serious type, my blogs and reviews are probably gonna be annoying as hell to read with all my lame-ass wisecracks... haha

I also talk about JoJo a LOT... #sorrynotsorry
