My biggest fear actually happened - broken detolfMy biggest fear actually happened - broken detolfDiary

So last night my detolf just decided to shatter at 12am. I didn´t even react at first I just stared at it and went like "f*ck". I was lucky enough that only the Right of the detolf shattered so the Damage on my figures is minimal (my panty and stocking trading Duos are scratched up and mostly the bases of a few other figures)
This was caused by a mug that was Standing on top of the detolf which was probably brought out of balance by my cat. That´s my guess at least because the only Thing I found that could have caused this was the mug on the Floor next to it. Anyway I evacuated all the figures into their boxes or in my other shelf. I´ve NEVER seen so many glass shards at once they are like skittles dude they are Tiny and literally EVERYWHERE. This is more of a vent than anything else. I did have a Little breakdown but I´m honestly fine, especially bc my figures are mostly unscathed.

Also don´t worry About detolfs collapsing just like that because this was this stupid mug so no Need to be paranoid.

Well all I can say is that this was a fucking Nightmare

Aw :( I'm glad the damage is minimal!

I read a similar story on here before (one of the glass shelves of the detolf shattered randomly in that one) and because of that i ordered custom acrylic plates in the same shape to replace the glass shelving in the detolfs that I own. It makes me less anxious about them, because my detolfs are second-hand ones and the glass edges were chipped (which is an indicator that they might shatter later on).

So if people like the detolfs perhaps changing out the glass for acrylic plates is an idea. It worked for me :)

StaticBreed7 mese/i fa#72515773Hello Hello,
Terrible thing to happen.. I can actually explain why! I have 6 Detolf and this happened to one of them, the reason is simple:
When building, if you make the top wooden cover too tight with the metal bars, it will put a huge amount of pressure on the glass and make it slightly bend (this is barely visible), and overtime.. the glass weakens more and more until it finally gives in.

After reading your comment I literally ran to check my 2 detolfs. One of them had one of the side glass really bent. With my partner, we tried to ease off the grip between the wooden cover and the metal bars but it seems that's not the problem. The holes of this detolf are not aligned (up and down) and that makes the glass to bent. So we took it down.

Definetly investing in some billys with glass doors for the next year. thank you very much for your advise!!!

I've Read some stories on here, But it still hasn't made me change my mind.
I'm still interested in buying at least 3 because paying for 1 with shipping costing basically another Detolf is stupid .... if 2-3 still has the same shipping fee, then I find that more reasonable.
But for 1 of them I'm going to have to manually tweek it to make it shorter :P that way it can fit in the corner right under my wall shelf I've already made (: https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2019/06/03/2228003.jpeg

Kind of glad Ikea doesn't exist in my country given all the reports I keep hearing about them breaking. That and I'm too lazy to actually assemble them whatsoever, I'm super glad I was able to buy ex-store display cases which aren't available to the public rather than having to track something that isn't a Detolf down.

Hello Hello,

I have 2 FREEing bunny girls on top of my Detolfs, no problem since the bars are not too tight and they are supporting the wood cover on top with the glass.

This can easily happen though because the instructions doesn't mention to leave them slightly loose. As soon as you feel they are getting tight, you stop completely!

Hope this helps for future..

RIP detolf

EternalTune7 mese/i fa#72510652This terrifies me.
Out of curiosity, how long have you had the detolf? Is there extreme temperature changes where the detolf is? I read once extreme changes in the temperature could cause tempered glass to shatter.
You have a cat, so I assume the cat is climbing jumping on it? I can't see how the glass mug falling would cause it. I can see a lotta weight on the top of them causing it.
I've had it for about 3-4 years but there was no weight strain or temperature change where it was. The only thing on top of it was the mug and two figmas

hobbitJP7 mese/i fa#72453247They mostly survived. One stitch on 1/4 Sarashiki was cut but it's not visible from the front. I won't buy another Detolf. I'm thinking Billy shelf with glass doors.

Having just bought two billy shelves along with IKEA's Morliden glass doors, I can definetly recommend. (Never particularly liked detolf's, and the billy option allowed me to get glass doors that only cover the top half of the shelves 'cos I don't like having figures at floor height.) They look really, really great.
