Evangelion Nagisa Kaworu - Precious G.E.M (Megahouse) ReviewEvangelion Nagisa Kaworu - Precious G.E.M (Megahouse) ReviewReview

annbeanishannbeanish4 mese/i fa
Hi friends. Times are rough and I've seen many articles on the current situation so I won't delve into it here, but I hope you're all doing okay. After being delayed for a month or so, ITEM #835965 Megahouse's Preious G.E.M Evangelion Shin Gekijoban Nagisa Kaworu (what a mouthful!) arrived this afternoon and after a while of laying down on the floor snapping pictures (the floor because my desk is too cluttered to offer a blank background), I thought I'd write up a short review on him.
***
I ordered from amiami, and inside of the amiami cardboard box he came packaged in another cardboard box, which would be the one provided by Megahouse. Nothing much to write home about here.

The actual figure box comes wrapped in tissue paper and features a nice, large window looking into the figure at the front. It's made of sturdy cardboard and while not the largest figure box I have received, it's not a size that would show mercy on shipping fees. I thought the simple gradient background that extends outward from Kaworu inside the box was a great concept that was executed beautifully - it's simple and doesn't distract from the figure, and ties everything together cleanly.

The lining card inside the box also follows this gradient:

Both sides are the same and feature smaller windows toward the front face of the box.

The back of the box:

Onto the - blister packaging. You thought we were finally at the figure but not yet aha. The blister is made of thick plastic, the kind that makes really loud noises when you pop it open. Unboxing in the dead of night is not recommended.
View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/04/06/2419790.jpeg

There are two layers to the blister, the top layer housing Kaworu, the lance and the base, and the second layer under him housing his wings. This second layer is held together by two wires. His wings are protected by a layer of bubble wrap, so everything is snug and secure.

The wings are a single piece, with a plug that connects to his back. They are beautiful, they are heavy, and they are probably what contributes to 70% of your shipping cost. Every feather is sculpted, and the dark purple gradient that lightens as you get to the bottom is flawless. Well done, Megahouse.

I took another photo of him on my desk with brighter lighting - you'll see that the ends are actually quite a pale purple.

And now onto the figure!

The main body is very light compared to the base (I'd say the base might be two times heavier), and quite small. Don't worry, there are photos of him further down without my hand ruining it.
View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/04/06/2419676.jpeg

The base features metal pegs, which is always a welcome material, especially for supporting the weight of his wings. The red sea is made of a clear plastic, and the ripples add a gentle movement to the overall figure. The rubble is sculpted well, and I appreciate the cracks and shading on the broken pieces. The feathers have gradient shading and the stems pointing upwards actually kind of hurt, so take care when handling.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/04/06/2419699.jpeg

The plug to swap out his wings is protected by a piece of plastic. I'd recommend holding the plastic and tugging on it to pull the plug out, as it's a tight fit and I found that to be the easiest way to remove the piece. (Look at that booty!!!)

He comes with a single instruction sheet which details how to connect his wings. I'm a bit surprised they didn't contain pointers for attaching the lance as well (more on that later).
View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/04/06/2419668.jpeg

Assembly is fairly straightforward. Pop the figure onto the base, attach the wings. The seam lines aren't big, and since it's at the back it's not much of a concern.
View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/04/06/2419687.jpeg
https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/04/06/2419686.jpeg

I had to make sure the wings were really snugly fit into his back and had to push hard against his chest and the base of the wings, because otherwise the wings tilted backwards on their own weight and came halfway out of the plug, and will probably fall out if left unattended. A longer connecting piece for a better peace of mind would have been ideal.
View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/04/06/2419689.jpeg

And now, the lance. The lance does not detach into two pieces, so you insert it from the bottom with the pointy tip and twist it upwards through his grip, and it will make slight squeaky noises that will terrify you. But keep twisting gently and you'll get there, and also because you don't have an option. Kaworu's arm offers some flexibility, which was definitely helpful.

There are two tiny holes in the base where the prongs of the lance should go. Why they didn't mention this in the instruction sheet I have no idea. "Let's only give instructions on how to fit in the wings. Let's not mention how to attach the lance. Let them suffer in fear of breaking this delicate, thin piece of plastic after paying 18K JPY."
View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/04/06/2419688.jpeg

You're gonna twist the lance into his hand, and then align the prongs into the holes and gently wiggle down until they're securely in the base.

Here he is fully assembled. The paint they used for his suit is glossy, so he is quite reflective. Same goes for the lance. His paintjob is extremely clean, and I didn't notice any flaws on my copy. I think his face is also faithful to the promotional images.

Here's the thing about the little gem in his chest. In the promo photos, it is red. In person, if you look at it with a flashlight, it is red. In normal light, it does not look red. I suspect this is due to the translucent material that they used.
View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/04/06/2419693.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/04/06/2419667.jpeg

Detailing on his hand, and he has two protective plastic stickers on his hips and thighs.
View spoilerHide spoilerhttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/04/06/2419695.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/04/06/2419681.jpeghttps://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/04/06/2419680.jpeg

His hair has no seam lines, and I especially love the way it looks from the back. Like a lil hedgehog. The gradient from a light to dark grey is subtle and natural.

Finally just a quick size comparison with another winged figure I had on hand, Yue (ITEM #464229). Kaworu looks smaller next to Yue, but I think that's largely due to the height difference and his slim body.

And we've reached the end of the review.

Thanks for taking the time to read this through. I hope this helps if you're on the fence about this guy, or if you're just waiting for him to arrive and desperate for information.

Take it easy, and have a good day!

annbeanish3 mese/i fa#77481510My pleasure writing this up (: I paid around the same amount for him (I'm gonna assume you mean USD), and I personally think he's worth every penny. However, it's quite a substantial amount to drop on a figure, so whenever I buy a figure on the pricier side I really make sure I would be happy to have them in my collection.
I only pre-order figures I know I desperately want in my collection - everything else I'm happy to wait for the aftermarket. This also means that if the price inflates like mad I probably wouldn't purchase, but that's fine since I had decided the moment I didn't pre-order that I would be okay not having those figures in my collection. It would be nice to have them, but I wouldn't stay up regretting it. There were times when I didn't know what I wanted and I made the wrong call, but it all comes down to whether you're willing to pay the price for the item, be it pre-order or in the aftermarket, and getting better at balancing what you like and what is reasonable to you. Obviously there are times when we cannot pre-order items we want simply because of budgeting constraints - in which case, it should be a no brainer that financial security takes precedence over this hobby.
At the end of the day, I can't really help you figure out exactly what Kaworu is worth - to me, he's definitely worth what I paid, and to a person who doesn't collect figures the idea of spending that amount on a plastic figurine is unfathomable. Perhaps you might be happier spending that 250 on a figure (or a few) you'd jump right off the fence for. I hope you figure it out and make a decision you'd be happy with! (:

I meant Euro, that's 270+ Dollar. :)

Well, I handle that like you - I really only order if I am sure it has to be this figure. I thought I was sure but then his release came nearer and the whopping amount knocked on my head. Compared to other figures I got for even much more money with so many details I really have to think again...

But well thanks a lot for your opinion! I will find a solution, I'm pretty sure.

I'm still on the fence... I would have to pay 250 to get him and I'm still unsure if he is worth that. May I ask for your opinion?

Bah-Roo4 mese/i fa#77278268Do you really want to thank me, though? Maybe you were better off not realising that difference...ignorance is bliss, after all. I kinda feel bad when I mention something in critique that a reviewer doesn't point out about the figure, lol. But in this case I don't think it's a big deal because he really does seem like a great figure! I could go check out your collection to find the answer to this myself, but do you have a big NGE collection? Cus I reckon he would look really great as a centre piece in an NGE collection/shrine :D
Thanks for crossing your fingers for me, hopefully it works! I don't know when I'll be able to afford him but yeah. Pls aftermarket, pls be nice 2 me !! :P
I'm happy with both mouth sculpts so it's not a big deal :D if you had pointed out a painting error on the other hand...and nah, I don't have a big NGE collection (only the SEGA figures of them sitting back to back). Honestly though, Kaworu looks stunning on any shelf (:

SpicyLeche4 mese/i fa#77277022Your review is absolutely lovely! And so helpful too!
The pictures really help show off his beauty. His wings are a lot prettier in rl compared to the promo pictures imo! His figure really turned out well!
Unfortunately, I lost my job due to covid and had to cancel my order for him due to financial reasons T - T
Ahhh but I’m so happy for the people that do have him! He’s really a grail figure to have.
Also I appreciate the comparison picture with Yue! I have him myself and I’ve been wanting to compared the two winged boys since FOREVER. So, thanks for that!
He’s smaller than I thought he’d be haha.
(You vs the Guy he tells you not to worry about)
Anyway, we all appreciate your awesome review and I hope you enjoy him!
Aw thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and it was my pleasure to write this up. Sorry to hear about your job situation...hopefully you'll be able to pick him up in the aftermarket when things calm down and life returns to the norm, but immediate financial security definitely takes precedence over this hobby.

Kaworu actually looks to be about the same size as Yue once you get him up on a riser and they're around the same height! I just kinda wish they both weren't facing and posed in the same angle haha.

Thank you for writing up this lovely review! I can finally relax a little since mine is still sitting around at customs in Japan. ^^;

Bah-Roo4 mese/i fa#77235099Thanks for the review, he looks awesome! I do want this figure, but for money reasons I can't get him yet. I hope his aftermarket price won't be ridiculous :\
I feel like his face looks a little less sharp than the promo pics; in the promo pics his mouth is more defined. But I don't really mind because overall he is really impressive and the quality looks great. Those wings are so beautiful *_*
Augh thanks for pointing the mouth out...I hadn't noticed aha. I hope the aftermarket treats you kindly, fingers crossed! (:
