Your Favorite Anime Film

Hello all! Welcome to a new article.

Having begun to study film theory at a hobbyist level, as well as the history of film, I'm inclined to start watching more anime movies too, so as to take a look at their directing, cinematography, and just how animation is different from live-action.

In the past half year, I've watched lots of new films, my favorites which were Alien, Let The Right One In, Pulp Fiction, and The Thing. And yet, I haven't watched a single anime film. Quick thoughts on those, by the way; View spoilerHide spoilerCan't believe the cat in Alien didn't die! Maybe it will in Aliens though, who knows? And as for The Thing...the poor dogs! The tentacles!...Kurt Russel was looking fine. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Pulp Fiction was...where do I start. It was gold. Let the Right One was like Kizumonogatari, in that if the vampires catch on fire in sunlight, it's a great movie. Simply put, they were great.

And speaking of great movies, here's the question;

What is your favorite anime film? What is the objective best anime film? Which was your first? Which will you watch next? And what would you like to see an anime film on, in terms of plot and themes?

Here are my favorites;

Spirited Away is a heart-warming masterpiece. The atmosphere, detail and tone is top-notch. Unique qualities are engrained into this movie. Characters are likable, fascinating, and realistic people, in a nuanced narrative; one of stellar animation, and enchanting mythology. It is moving, a term I don't use lightly, and so funny, too. Not to mention the music is great. Thematic and incredibly meaningful.

Plot line? Very original. Theme of empathy, companionship and acceptance? Done in a high-brow, pragmatic, pull-at-your-heartstrings way. World building? This movie unlocked a new achievement for the film industry in how fantastically it world-builds.

The motivations of the characters, who give meaning to their journey, is nothing short of the most admirable writing. Dialogue is top-tier. Direction rivals that of the best from the West (don't mind the rhyming). Passion overflows from this thing, and it makes me feel...ahem...warm and fuzzy inside. You didn't hear that phrase used by me. No one can do the movie justice in explaining what it is. One of the only things out there that really is beyond incredible in the sphere anime. It's good in every single way.

I haven't seen Howl's Moving Castle in maybe four years, and barely remember anything, but I'm ready all the more to watch it again! Another movie that is extremely complex in its sheer artfulness and accomplishment, that makes me feel warm and fuzzy...hey, who said that?

Yeah...Kizumonogatari is a little less warm and fuzzy.

Kizumonogatari - you've got CGI, live-action backgrounds, jazz, head-patting, cartoony animation, baseball, a giant cross as a weapon, crows, old-time-y, black cars, French text, black and white screen flashes, three new Shinobu/Kiss-Shot looks, Hanekawa cat faces, Hanekawa cat faces, and more Hanekawa cat faces.

Anything that stems from the writing of Nisioisin is destined to be intricate, both incredibly subtle and brash, satirical, character-driven, and a story you've never heard before. Kizu was stylistic, symbolic, idiosyncratic, a commentary on virtue and power, and evocative, in terms of the trials and tragedy of the two leading vampires, while being so much more. What the tragedy and suffering lead to, seen in the main series, is a sight for sore eyes. Masterfully directed, written, and adapted, it is a true 11/10. Cute and yet horrifying at times.

Answers, continued;

The objective best anime film is what I don't yet know, due to my lack of seeing any. I have a hunch it will be Akira though, for me. My first anime film was likely Totoro.

Soon enough, I want to next watch Racsal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl, Paprika, Akira, Your Name, and A Silent Voice. I know, I'm behind on the times, despite that I've watched anime seriously for seven years. I have yet to finish Saekano, but as it's so far enjoyable, I look forward to the English release of its movie.

And finally, as for what I would like to see plot and theme-wise, I like supernatural and psychological movies, and themes of revenge, identity, and oppression.

...and that's a wrap, for this article!

Thanks for reading. Have a good one...
...stay smug...
...and stay sleepy.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica III : Rebellion takes my number one spot

Then Fate/Stay Night; Heavens Feel pt.II Lost Butterfly is a close second

Although I’m a huge sucker for the Pokémon movies, especially Hoopa and the Clash of Ages

My first anime film is probably Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. It was a great film!

It's hard for me to pick one favourite. I love most things directed by Miyazaki Hayao or Kon Satoshi.

I guess I'll list some films in no particular order:
Howl's Moving Castle
Kiki's Delivery Service
Mary and the Witch's Flower
Hotarubi no Mori e
Captain Harlock
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
The Boy and the Beast

I like quite a lot of anime movies, but a few that think stands out from my list are:

Silent Voice 聲の形
No game no life Zero ノーゲーム・ノーライフ ゼロ
I want to eat your pancreas 君の膵臓をたべたい
Your name 君の名は
Weather with you 天気の子

My favorites are probably the Kara no Kyokai movies. I cannot pick a single one out of the 8, just like how I cannot choose a favorite Star Wars movie between 1 and 6.
I love the Nasuverse, and this is a really interesting, character driven mystery/supernatural entry in the series. The romance is also very sweet, probably one of my favorite in anime to this day. Visuals can be breathtaking and the action is really nice as well.
They can be hard to grasp at first though.
Honorable mention to 5 cm/second which made me cry like a baby and got me sad for days. Really beautiful story and breathtaking visuals though so I don't regret watching it at all. I do have a need for some funny anime though.

My first anime movie was Fairy Tail Phoenix Priestess. It was good enough for one and I revisited once but it only reassured that I would not enjoy the mainline Fairy Tail series as I found most of the mainline main characters pretty annoying.

Objective best, no idea. I can only offer my subjective opinion.

My next is probably either Konosuba Legend of the Crimson Demon, Goblin Slayer Goblin's Crown or Date a Live Mayuri's Judgement.

Galaxy express 999, Aim for the top Gunbuster, Cowboy bebop, Mobile suit Z gundam (TV), Turn A gundam (TV)... etc

Mmmmm I'd say my favorite anime movies are Millennium Actress and Whisper of the Heart.

If we're talking franchises, my faves are The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi and the first Psycho Pass movie. I wish Psycho Pass in general had more figures tbh.

Chloe-tsundere The louise otaku
Hmm my favorite movie would be princess kaguya.
But I also love colorful the movie.

Colorful cause it's psychological and touching..
Maybe cause some parts remind me of my own past.
And princess kaguya for the hidden message, artstyle and that it's an actual tale from japan

2199 Yamato space battle ship

My favorite anime film would have to be either 5 Centimeters Per Second or End of Evangelion. For the latter, there's so much to dissect that you could watch the movie a hundred times and still discover new subtle little things each time. I also appreciate the fact on some level that Hideaki Anno pretty much set out to piss off the whole Eva fanbase and ended up making a fantastic movie.

5 Centimeters Per Second is the film that cemented in my mind the genius of Makoto Shinkai. It's such a beautiful movie to look at, and I enjoy the melancholic yet hopeful tone of the film. Boy meets girl, boy and girl drift apart, boy doesn't quite ever get over girl, but finally boy gets on with his life.
