Part 1 here! BLOG #45336

This blog will be picture-heavy!

It's been a while since part 1! And HOO BOY do I have updates
First off I made another custom of my OC Valentine, you can check him out here. BLOG #45665 He employs a lot of different things I don't use here!
Second, all my stuff came in a while ago so I technically finished a bit ago, but you'll see what uh. Happened.
In the end it was actually a good thing to happen, in a weird way. A redo happened and came out better than the first round, so I'm happy with him!

RECAP

Kouta my 32 year old infant is getting a nendo. He's also pretty weird despite looking plain, here's an info page.

He was thought to be a pretty easy build, just needing to take parts and paint them over, but in the end it was an entirely different situation. Parts list here!

So, what happened?

I'm either super incompetent with sealant or got an old/bad batch.
I won't detail my process here since I did it slightly different in the end.
Everything was ready to go and finished, just had to seal. But something in the process got wonky and... YEAH

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

The sealant frosted things over and made parts sticky or just flake off. Tried isopropyl alcohol along with acetone, wouldn't budge a bit.

And..?

Decided it was worth a try with some new methods and to skip the sealant.
I bought his faceplate source again and gave it a second round! And this time, since the body was FUBAR, I went with a Nendoroid Doll body and clothes.

His clothes were found from Aliexpress, and his shoes are from Ryo's nendoll. They're not black but brown, and honestly it's dark enough I don't mind. Sourced again from Chibi Chop Shop! (Not a sponsor but I mean if they want to....... I am here.)

This time around for supplies I used a super fine brush, a pencil, Tamiya's Liquid Surface White Primer, acrylic paints, and watercolor pencils.
When using acrylic paints, I thinned it with about 25-50% water for smooth application.

Redo!

Here's a look at the previous FUBAR faces and the factory-fresh ones:

I went the same route of a cotton swab soaked in acetone to remove the eyebrows. Rinse off after otherwise it'll eat the PVC and anything you put on top of it!

https://i.postimg.cc/VLcHFz7K/IMG-2121.jpg

And some pencil to lightly draw them in. I didn't redo the eyebrows on the angry faceplate, instead just colored them in black.

And the same as before, I primed in the pupils.

Now where it gets different, last time I used a super thin brush to apply paint. I thought it over and after penciling eyebrows in, realized.
Wait, can't I just dip a pencil in paint for the really small parts?
Experimented by coloring in the pre-existing brows...

It came out so clean..!!
Just by getting a little blob of paint on the tip, it's so easy and smooth to redirect it to where it needs. This was a HAIL MARY compared to last time, the plastic ate up SO MUCH ACETONE from corrections. The PVC was practically gummy to the touch.
So I did the rest!

When it comes to face-up, Kouta pretty much always has a flustered or blushing face, so I lightly drew in some blush marks with DRY watercolor pencils. To blend them out, all I needed to do was to wet it and wipe away all the water. It nicely absorbs into the PVC with an airbrush effect, and still keeps faint signs of the original marks. 1-2 passes was good enough and not overbearing. Also added a bit to the bottom lip.

Left is dry, right is after applying water.

I also really like the look of adding white shiny bits on the cheeks. Adds moe?

https://i.postimg.cc/9M7JGky3/IMG-2134.jpg

Now for the eyes, I took diluted red acrylic paint and applied 2 coats per pupil. Just the base color. I used a fine brush for this, as to not dent the primer.

https://i.postimg.cc/Ghrqyq2N/IMG-2135.jpg

For contrast, I chose to make his eye shadows purple, and his bottom highlight orange and yellow. It makes them pop a bit.
I soaked my watercolor pencils in water for a bit and applied via dotting and making small strokes. If you're too rough, the base coat WILL come off. It takes a lot of patience for it to absorb!

https://i.postimg.cc/QNcfCRX1/IMG-2140.jpg

Then some black for the middle of his eyes. I used the same pencil technique with this.

https://i.postimg.cc/Dww6C01P/IMG-2143.jpg

And dotted in highlights with the pencil!

https://i.postimg.cc/7YVXM0JL/IMG-2141.jpg

The full cast.

In the end I'm really happy I did another try, it came out so much better and cleaner this time around. Just for the love of god I'm not sealing again LMAO

So after all that and the clothes coming in, I'm very proud to say Kouta is finished! He's precious and I love him a lot, even if he gave me a fucking coronary making him

And some shots with my other son, his honorary brother

I like to make him a bully target.

I'm nowhere near done with customs, I actually have another in mind and am currently making one for fellow MFC user and friend LemonyLulu of her OC Benny Sugar-Ray. (I hope one of y'all know this reference)
I'll be uploading progress on him as well!

Thanks for reading!

Magusfigures27 giorno/i fa#80468871Those expressions came out fantastic!!! I love the use of blue and orange to shade/highlight the eyes; it really made the colors pop :>
and good discovery of using a pencil as a paintbrush; if I ever decide to dip my toes into customs i will for sure remember this lmao

lesser-robot-cat27 giorno/i fa#80473046He turned out so cute! The glasses are moe af with those flustered expressions!
When it's humid, or if the can needs a thorough shaking, sealant fogs up. (Which is why I almost never seal...) Sometimes blasting it with a heat gun will cure out the fog. If you want to try sealing again, paint a couple of plastic spoons and seal those first. If they come out clear, keep going. If they fog up, don't risk it!
Kemcy27 giorno/i fa#80473371His faces turned out awesome! Thank you for sharing this. I'm always struggling with customizing faces and reading this gave me a few pointers as to how to make them better :)yoonie26 giorno/i fa#80502455so beautiful !!
Thank you all so much for your kind comments!! And I'm glad I could help some of you out with this!
I had no idea about the sealant.... RIP well at least I know now!

With the sealant, you need to go through the bottle fast after opening or it gets weird. I have to shake the can for two minutes and have it at ambient temp when I spray outside. It’s very humid where I am, so precautions are taken each time.
Megane OC’s :3 Love them.

Makes me want to make a few myself though due to complex designs the only ones I could do would be hati since she just looks like a Rem with horns, dog ears and a tail and wings haha(except her eye isn’t covered and she has brown eyes instead of blue) sounds like a mouthful design but trust me it works

Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial. It was really interesting and helpful to see the process behind customizing a faceplate. Your custom looks great—the eyes are striking!
