Koto Bishoujo Dark Phoenix 1/7 ReviewKoto Bishoujo Dark Phoenix 1/7 ReviewReview

Hello everyone,

This is my first review of a figure on this site, and it will be Kotobukiya Bishoujo Dark Phoenix Rebirth 1/7.

Without further ado, these are the pics of the box she comes packaged in:-

It is nothing too fancy, but the window shows enough of the figure for those of you who do want to display the statue in the packaging. The base does not come fixed to the figure, but is carefully packaged behind the figure in a separate blister package layer. Something of a first time seeing it for me in this line, they even had foam wrappings around some parts of the figure for protection. Everything is carefully packed and protected.

One thing that immediately struck me as I took the figure out of the package is how light it felt compared to previous releases. Once you put it on the base, it does come to around the same weight, but by itself, it is considerably more lighter. While it is certainly smaller than the older 1/7 scale releases, it does fit quite well with the GI JOE Scarlette figure I have. Overall, it does feel more like a 1/8 than a 1/7 scale figure.

Moving onto the assemble statue, here are some photos of the statue from all the sides:-

There are no paint defects that I could spot, and everything is very nicely painted. The red parts of the statue have a more matte/non-glossy finish while the yellow parts are more glossier. I would have personally liked glossy red paint, like they used with Spider-woman, but this is good too and it does allow it to differentiate itself more on my shelf that also has Spider-woman.

Here is a more focused photo of the portrait:-

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/09/12/2518024.jpeg

The base is also translucent and does add more complete effect when lit up as can be seen here:-

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/09/12/2518025.jpeg

Personally, I thought it was quite decent execution, though I would change some minor things about the design if I could. I should also mention that this statue has a sleight unevenness in the base, same as what I experienced with my GI Joe Scarlette figure. It does not cause either statue to wobble, but it is there. However, I think it will balance itself out overtime, as it has happened in my Scarlette figure. Maybe this is a downside of not having an actual flat traditional base like in the old Bishoujos. But, I do like this baseless (in the traditional sense) trend they seem to be going for lately (this one, Scarlette, and Poison Ivy).

To cap things off, here are couple more edited photos of the figure :) :-

Figureditout1 mese/i fa#84422163Who is that long haired dude with the gun? Early version of Cable? It's incredible to imagine how old comics are and that some who read them as children, are old retired men by now.
Ehhhh I have to admit I thought all female characters were stupid as a child. So you were ahead of me in terms of Rogue. But yeah, from nowadays perspective she looked awesome.

I had no idea who he was and had to look it up. His name appears to be Forge:-

Yea, I am not sure why I liked the character back then as a kid haha. Might have been because she hung around with Gambit, or her accent in the show lol.

I have to say, I really love the Rogue costume though lol. Again, might be a subconscious bias from childhood.

Figureditout1 mese/i fa#84415399Cyclops has the same color pattern, just that blue is his dominant color while yellow is the secondary one. Rogue was wearing yellow spandex but with green and under her leather jacket so it's not as obvious. Jubilee was having the yellow trenchcoat to blend in with the crowd, but yeah sort of youngster rebel style idk maybe it was cool back then. I have to say I could not watch it a lot as a kid because I was under close parental surveillance.^^ So... what about Colossus and Pyro? I think they had some larger yellow parts on their costumes. But I'm not sure.
lol, its funny you mentioned it, but I was not allowed to watch most X-men episodes by my parents too. But, I fell in love with the show and characters from the very few I saw.

You are definitely right that they seem to have a bit of yellow in almost all of the costumes. This is what I figure from a quick look into it just now (I am not a very well versed in the comic book history and stuff). The early 90's seemed to have the X-men in a more yellow-blue costume for the whole team:-

It appears that when Jim Lee started mid 90's, he redesigned the team, and most of what folks know as X-men come from his redesign:-

This seems to have been the inspiration for the 90's cartoon as well.

I have to say, I really love the Rogue costume though lol. Again, might be a subconscious bias from childhood. I think it is just that after Jim Lee redesign, the characters never really got a unique enough design that stuck with them. Or maybe it was just that after that era, the X-men comic stories were not as memorable too. So no one really remembers the new costumes as much.

Still, only Jean and Wolverine actually have the yellow spandex in the 90's cartoon (this is the one I grew up with, and so it has that special place).

Figureditout1 mese/i fa#84409829Staring at her atm, I feel like on mine the eyes are more evenly looking upwards and a tiny little bit less inwards. I feel like her left (right from our side) eye in your pictures is higher than the left one. But it might just appear different on photos taken from multiple angles.
Hmm not sure, I think the old yellow spandex costumes were fine in the 90s but I'm not a big fan of their old looks anymore if I'm perfectly honest with you.

Oh, I think it might be something due to the angle in which the photos were taken in my case. When I look at it on my shelf head on, they do look to be the same height (looking at the distance to where the iris starts from the bottom). Because I took the shots at an angle from bottom up and at an angle with her right eye closer to the lens, I think it gives that illusion. Generally, I find that Koto usually doesn't mess up the eye locations. I don't think they had paint too.

Haha, I know what you mean about the costumes. They do indeed look a bit silly given that it has zero utility for stealth lol. Still, only Jean and Wolverine actually have the yellow spandex in the 90's cartoon (this is the one I grew up with, and so it has that special place). It is like the only costume I know of Jean Grey. The Phoenix ones are nice, but they aren't her costume though. So that is why I would like them to make a Jean Grey one. Wolverine has his X-force look now, which I do prefer as well.

Sideshow has this Jean on PO, but its a bit outside of my price and space range:-

I am not sure about the eye angle. Does it look very different in yours?
[...] If they had done a Jean Grey like their old one ITEM #52689, now that would be nice!

Figureditout1 mese/i fa#84342698Hey mate, nice review! Even with Photoshop effects at the end, wow!
I myself rated her just a little below you but basically agree with everything. Mine wobbles too btw but it has not sorted itself out so far. I'm leaning her against a wall. I think had they made the figure heavier, she would topple over all the time.
I noticed yours has a different eye angle from mine or maybe I'm imagining things. They might be hand painted so that's probably why.
I was just kind of bummed when they announced her friendly persona version right after this figure released, I basically held her in my hand and there was that announcement, haha. Would have preferred her with green eyes, friendly expression and more orange fire.
I'm also happy that she wasn't so expensive, even though Bishoujo is not as cheap as it used to be anymore. Still great value for what you gets.
Hope you will make more reviews in the future!

Thanks bud, really appreciate the kind words :)

In regards to the variant, I felt that it was a bit odd looking though. Without the menacing look, her pose with her hands down looked a bit weird haha. So I think we made the right choice with this one. If they had done a Jean Grey like their old one ITEM #52689, now that would be nice!

AgentDrafire2 mese/i fa#83128822She looks AWESOME! I love the fire effects a lot and when you put it with the light like that, it looks even cooler! And the edited pictures at the end are so amazing! Great review too, I really enjoyed reading it! :)
Thank you :)! This is one of the statues where I was on the fence on purchasing it for a looong time. I really like how she turned out now that I have her in hand.
