Magic Mould - AKA: Re2ing Figure Review

I know almost nothing about this character, but bought her based on her looks. She has a goth “Little Red Riding Hood” theme going on and the giant scissor weapon was a cool selling point for me. The illustrator is Neco, who seems to do a lot of characters for Myethos in their A-Z: series. Mostly, what I would consider pretty goth girls with black jackets or hoods and big weapons.

Magic Mould is a rather new manufacturer who is distributed through Good Smile Company. Her box measures 12 x 12 x 6 inches wide. Not huge, but most likely will not be cheap via DHL.
This figure caused quite a lot of controversy upon release as a few users posted some photos where the paint on her ribbon of her hair was poorly applied. Luckily, mine didn’t suffer from that issue.

Here's a shot of her box illustration that she's based on by Neco. I don't like box photos, so you'll have to go somewhere else for that.

Sculpt – 9.0
Her sculpt is quite faithful to the prototype. The face looks a little smaller, but mostly the chair, large scissor weapon and details are the same. I had a little extra plastic on one part of her bangs opposite her hood, but that is the only issue. The rose engravings on the chair are quite detailed and the scissors are sculpted to feel like you could actually use them to cut something. She has sculpted abs, although not as defined in the prototype and there are wrinkles on her hood in the back. I also love the tiny details, such as the pins on her hood and the numbers on her socks. The leather scissor holder on her thigh is also sculpted nicely.

Painting – 8.0
Overall, the paint is neat with no major bleeding. However, the color of her hair is rather flat and lacks shading. The paint on the chair is also a bronze color and makes it look a bit plasticky. There’s a nice glossiness to her boots and her cloak also has shading on it as well. She doesn't have the best paint job, but not so bad there’s noticeable defects. I would say painting is closest to Myethos or Kotobukiya quality-wise.

Pose – 9.5
It’s hard to create a pose where the chair is tipping upward and balancing on two legs. I applaud the manufacturer on the ingenious way they did this. To get the unbalanced feel, you insert the chair legs into two clear slots, which amazingly hold it up with the help of the scissor weapon inserted as the third point of contact. She looks very dynamic with one leg bent and the other in the air with her scissor weapon behind her.

Base – 6.5
My biggest gripe about this figure is her base is enormous. It is mirrored which gives the overall figure a unique look (but there’s also no panty shot to see, so why did they do it?). The huge issues is that it’s a space hog –- it measures around 10.5 inches x 10.5 inches. In my mind, this is excessive and the mirror surface can easily get dirty with dust or even scratched. I wished the manufacturer went with a smaller rectangular base, even in basic black with some gold trim would have looked nicer than this behemoth.

If we counted the scissors and chair as part of the base, my rating would go up. They're both fairly detailed, and I love the gradient of the scissors from red to black.

The one thing that worries me is she's only being held onto by three points. Two where the chair is inserted into the clear holders, and a third where a plastic peg goes into the hole at the edge of the base. She's quite stable after you put her in. Just don't move her around a lot, since the chair is delicately balanced.

Enjoyment – 9.0
Despite some minor issues, AKA: Re2ing is still a cool figure with a great concept. Some poor execution on the painting is a bit disappointing, but not a deal breaker for me. Her price is rather "average" these days for a 1/7 scale figure, which means she'll cost you upwards of 20,000JPY.

If you love, gothic girls with unique concepts, I would recommend purchasing her. However, if you lack space, I would skip her since her base is so large. I’ve seen her go for about 16K unopened on Mandarake. It's unclear whether her price will continue to fall, or will sky rocket after local Japanese stores run out of stock. If you can get her for below retail price, I would go for her if you like her looks and have room to spare.

I love the design of this figure so much! Thanks for the review! :)

oof, hope, i'm glad to see that at least SOME people got a decent painting.
sure it's still not great for the price point, but at least it's not less-than-prize figure levels...

while i love the other girls neco made(HAHSG(specificaly Shi), the suit ones, the new upcoming one from myethos, etc) the red cloak on this one is something i love, it has an obviously red riding hood aesthetic but without being anywhere near that explicit, to the point i actually am doubting my own statement... but regardless, point remains that it mixes a much more inspired theme while keeping Neco's iconic style.
i was really looking forward to this figure, and while i could definitely do with some extra cash, it'd pain me terribly to sell it due to the abysmal paint quality(which i have even more reason to do now that i know some of the pieces have more reasonable standards of quality), so, fingers crossed.

kisuriurisan1 mese/i fa#92680713Good review. Just want to add that the box I got came with a small plastic peg to place under her dangling left foot for a little more support. .
OMG, thanks for pointing this out. I missed this and found mine in the box. It took a bit of wiggling to get it under her foot in the right place. It makes me feel better she has some support other than just the chair legs.

victorviper1 mese/i fa#92680226So can the figure stay properly balanced without using the base?
A very neat concept, but the gigantic base and the complaints about iffy QC have kind of moved this figure off my wishlist.

I took her out of her supports to see if I could display her without the base. I wouldn't recommend it, as the chair legs are thin points, and prone to breakage without slipping them into the proper slots in the base.

I guess for this figure it's better to buy preowned, so you can see if it turned out alright. Unless there's a huge price drop, I won't get her. Wouldn't pay more than 80-100 bucks.

You're welcome. I don't imagine she'll drop to half her price though, since a lot of people are fans of her design. But who knows, maybe you'll find a pre-owned one for a decent price.

carbonmonoxide1 mese/i fa#92615238Mine came out similar to yours (thank God!). The hair painting is rough, but not bad compared to the ones on her MFC page. Mine has a slight flat area on her thigh. Overall I'm happy, but for $200 I expected better.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who got a decent copy. I agree, she was pricey for what you get. I felt like I should have waited for her release to see photos, but I thought her design looked so nice, I was afraid I'd missed out.

Stereoman1 mese/i fa#92614720Great review! Had no idea the base would look like this! I'll have to puzzle her into my collection somehow when I get her. She has been on her way for a week now!
I love this illustrator's works and have most figures. I strongly recommend all of them!

Yes, he seems to have a very unique design. I do love her because she has a red cloak on, vs the A:Z series seems to be all in black jackets or outfits and I'm really not a fan. I actually love the Myethos Iron Saga Theresa figure which has a similar art aesthetic to Neco.

Good review. Just want to add that the box I got came with a small plastic peg to place under her dangling left foot for a little more support. It kinda ruins the aesthetic, but I'm still going to use it to take some strain off of those thin chair legs. My box also came with a loose window and a few dings. Overall, I'm glad to finally have her, but will probably wait until release before ordering another figure from MM.

Thanks for the review. I think yours does look a bit better than the other ones I've seen on here. It's a shame that Magic Moulds QC seems to be complete garbage. I was really looking forward to this figure, because I thought that she would look great with the Myethos Cheshire Cat (not released yet) in a fairy tale themed display. I'm glad I waited for some real pictures though, because if I got one of the shittier ones I'd have been highly disapointed.
