And since I'm a complete newbie to DIY I'll be going for something relatively simple - I'm looking into using wood or a combination of styrofoam & modelling clay. I'll probably stick to simple/plain designs for now too, my main priority is to get the hang of the basics first :3

You’re welcome. The material that gives the best result is the material that you know best. Sounds a bit cliche. In reality it is often true. Out of the three materials you mentioned wood is for me the material of choice. For figure bases I recommend a soft type of wood like pinewood. Don’t use wood that is really thin, it will bend over time. The easiest way for the peg holes in wood is to use a pencil to draw circles around the pegs for position. Then measure the diameter of the peg.
Drilling the holes with a drill the same diameter. In case necessary drill the hole (s) again with a drill that is one size bigger. Don’t put the figure in place with force. In case the hole is too big ad some bluetac around the peg with a needle.
This is one example how to create a base in wood.
What kind of base and material you choose, I hope that you will share your results. And if you come across some problem in the proces don’t be scared to post some photo’s and ask for help. Most of the people on MFC are friendly and helpful.

Rajke23 giorno/i fa#103555340Hi Fuwamaid,
There are some interesting blogs about custom bases on MFC. (Filter on base in the article section.) A lot of the blogs goes about modifying existing bases but also members who build them from scratch. Do you have a certain idea, material or style in mind for the custom base?

Rajke1 anno/i fa#84582574It depends on the nailpolish. Nailpolish that is thick is difficult to apply (not impossible, small note: do not mix it with water to make it thinner it resulted in bubbles and uneven layers). With painting on PVC objects I recommend a layer of coating before applying the nailpolish itself. A lot of paint easily comes of from PVC material which could include nail polish. The best way to find out what works and what doesn’t work is to try and paint a few samples (stuff made from a similar material, I remember seeing plastic spoons used as test objects).
My advice: use some samples and try it out.

Thanks! I'll look around and see what I can find.

aleigh10041 anno/i fa#84527098Has anyone ever used nail polish to customize a figure/base? I'm shopping mandarake and would love to try it on some cheaper-looking figures to spice them up a little. I ask about nail polish because I'm talking about a figure I would spend like $4 on and I don't have a whole lot of paint lying around, what I do have is a ton of nail polish. So you know, just wondering if anyone's got any experience with that.
